(460-377 B.C.): Hippocrates and Plato deem mental disorders to be the result of biological and psychological factors rather than supernatural causes. (5th-15th century): Mental illness was linked to demonic possession and treated through exorcisms and religious rituals. 16th century: Society began using asylums to confine mentally ill individuals controlling them rather than treating them. 18th century: Philippe Pinel introduced a moral human treatment of mentally ill people in France. Late 18th-19th century: Scientists like Emil Kraepelin & Wilhelm Griesinger advocate for the study of mental disorders causing psychiatry to emerge as a distinct field of study. Late 19th-early 20th century: Sigmund Freud develops psychoanalysis seeking to answer the question of how psychologically based mental disorders develop. Early 20th century: John B. Watson changed the focus of psychology to the study of overt behavior called behaviorism.
