For the most part, you remember the pivotal moments in your life better than anyone. • You understand the context of the event. You know what happened before and after the event. • Your own life gives your writing inspiration. You are your own best audience! Why you are the worst possible source of information about your life: • Your memory may have changed or lost some of the key details about an event. • You may have altered the significance of the event in your mind or through conversations with others over time. • It may be too painful or challenging to look at the events of the past with the wisdom of the present. Does all personal experience writing have to tell a story? • Yes and no. • Draw on everything in your writer’s toolbox: narration, description, cause/effect analysis, illustration, comparison/contrast, argument.
