Instructions for writing an essay that illustrates a person's character and personality through the use of two or three illustrations or stories. Use “Flavio’s Home,” “Sister Flowers,” and “Shooting an Elephant” as your inspiration. Use “Cherry” as a model essay. Your essay needs to be a minimum of 500 words for the rough draft and 750 words for the final draft. ILLUSTRATIONS  After setting up the dominant impression of that person for your essay, provide two or three short illustrations/stories that show your subject’s character.  In “Cherry,” the protagonist’s “outlaw tendencies” is shown through the author’s descriptions and stories.  Mary Karr then tells the story of how Cherry (Clarice) stripped in front of her while her mother, Mrs. Carter, chases them with a spatula.  You also need to provide some short stories as well.  “Cherry” Thesis: Only one girl showed outlaw tendencies nearly as wild as mine: Clarice Fontenot, who at fourteen had three years on me, which discrepancy didn’t seem to matter at first. Dominant Impression “Outlaw Tendencies” Setting that matches these “tendencies”—celery-green house Catholic household (which creates rebellion) Historical Perspective “Old School” values Women stay at home and serve the men Men do as they please Fathers much more strict on little girls Living a strict life
