Andrew Koller Hersh 02/27/09 Writing and Rhetoric Rhetorical Analysis of Reagan In the six years prior to 1987 the conservative party had regained it's popularity among the American people due to Ronal Reagan. It was because Reagan had managed to bridge the gap between social and economic conservatives, successfully uniting what would be called "The New Republican Party". Once the lines had disappeared Reagan set out a new agenda which both wings of conservatives could appreciate. When Ronald Reagan was half way through his second term as president of the United States, he delivered a speech that would further illustrate the the new unity in, "A Future That Works". Where he addressed the adversity that the conservative party had overcome. Because of Ronald Reagan's careful use of rhetorical skills, he manages to appeal to a select group through the themes of accomplishment, family, and as though they are the light at the end of the tunnel. Throughout the speech Reagan consistently compares what the conservatives have accomplished to some sort of giant battle in which they are winning. "What we've accomplished these last six years wouldn't have been possible without a solid foundation, one painstakingly laid". The words accomplished, and solid are two particularly rhetorically choses words. As a revived political party, it is great positive reinforcement for the conservatives to hear that they are having an impact. Rhetorically speaking, it is pure genius for Reagan to appeal to the audience this way. In this Reagan clearly knew whom he would be speaking to and how to swoon them. As a general rule of thumb, a person should avoid the word "you" in most types of literature. When considering this rule, Reagan failed miserably, "You are truly freedom's team". However, the various "you"s that Reagan throws out there are placed with great rhetoric care. The word "you" is very personal, and Reagan uses it in order to connect with the audience on a different level. He wants the audience to feel like he is being personal because it makes them feel more connected with the cause. Reagan also constantly compares the conservative party to one giant family. The rhetoric usage of the words like "you" and "family" are pure gold in this speech. Through these words Reagan manages to establish a very strong bond with the audience. To further establish this bond, Reagan makes his fellow conservatives feel special; a light at the end of the tunnel. In this speech Reagan was recorded saying, "Conservatives are working for a society where children are cherished and in school are taught not only reading, writing, and arithmetic but fundamental values as well". From this the conservatives can feel like they are doing to world justice. The purpose of Reagan mentioning all the great things the conservative party is doing is the same reason Oscar winners thank their supporting cast. They know that even though the spotlight is on them, they would be no where with out followers. This is particularly true in politics, where the strength really does come from numbers. Obviously, Reagan realized this and he wanted his followers to know that they are appreciated so they would continue the support. For obvious reasons Reagan's nickname was "The Great Communicator".
