In other words, we have discussed the continued colonization of Native America through the institutionalization of Native peoples from the late nineteenth century to this present moment. For Essay 7, I would like you to think about the issues and readings we have discussed throughout the semester and write a critical seven-page paper on the relationship between Native peoples and non-Native perceptions of Native peoples in The Surrounded and Zitkala-Sa’s “Indian Boarding School Days.” How do preconceived ideas of Native peoples in the American cultural imaginary shape institutions that manage Native peoples? How have institutions of education shaped non-Native perceptions of Native peoples? (Use your educational experience, or lack of education, of Native peoples to answer this question.) Describe how education has been a key method of Native genocide in the United States and has worked to justify this genocide through willful ignorance and erasure of Native political issues. The purpose of this essay is to go through the process of researching, crafting, and executing a polished research project. I am looking for a thoughtful essay that connects the cultural representations of Native peoples into political policy.
