¡Descarga Centenarians' Secrets: Genetics, Lifestyle, and Coping with Adversity - Prof. W. y más Apuntes en PDF de Comunicación Audiovisual solo en Docsity! 100 YEARS , 100 REASONS On the last few decades the age of living has risen about 20 or 30 years, It was unthinkable in the 50s that people would be living over the 100 years, but now is a reality and people like Esther Tuttle and Guisepinna Costa, both centenarians, have shared their history, their lifestyle and their difficulties through that long lifetime. Mrs.Tuttle, who is best known as Faity , her childhood name, is an American woman who wrote a memoir called ''No Rocking Chair For Me'' , and Guiseppina is an Italian woman who loves her family over all. Mrs.Tuttle at her age is able to remember a great number of moments from the past in a detailed way, wich is an impressive demonstration of an active brain. Faity's parents died at ages 42 and 50 , leaving her an orphan at age 11. Few years after this moment , she decided to became an actress, which led to to a hardscrabble existence that persisted through the early years of her marriage and life on a farm with three small children and no electricity and makeshift indoor plumbing. Despite her tragic life , she has always been a positive woman, she does lots of exercise and tries to be always cheerful. Guiseppina's life is different she was the third of six children, her father was a fisherman so her daily diet was based on fish. Guiseppina has inherited her mother's talent for cooking, she cooks the local dishes of the island and traditional holidays recipes. She use food to express her love for the family , however today shes to old to cook , but she is happy to direct the food preparation. Another passion she has is sewing, she never worked profesionally on it but he sewed perfectly for the family. His life got complicated when world War 2 made the family return from Algiers to a destroyed postwar Italy , they immigrated to the United States around 10 years later , where they started living on a house with running water, refrigerator and washing machine, it was their dream come true. In the US Guisppina joined the ''afternoon cofee club'' where she made lots of friends. Despite his husband Antonio's death in 1981 she is still wedded to him both emotionally and spiritually. Now Guiseppina joyfully dedicates her life to her family. But , what is their secret? It is difficult to determine an only reason for longevity , but from both lives we can extract a rack of possible reasons why these women have reached the 100 years. The first one is genetics , the same Mrs.Tuttle had a sister who lived until age 96 , however some studies have shown that genetics do determine longevity in a small percentage. Then we have lifestyle , which basically consists on food and exercise. We know Faity has a careful diet, containing soup and lots of fruit , she also sleeps many hours and does a lot of exercise, including a half-an-hour daily walk and an hour of yoga. However, Guiseppina's cooking passion leads us to think she didn't had an extremely careful diet. Third one is optimism , both Mrs.Tuttle and Guiseppine were optimists , who went over their hardships , looking at life in a positive way, which, as studies indicate, reduces the possibility of dying from a heart disease, having high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. Finally , we get to a factor that they both share: coping with poverty or traumatic life events Mrs.Tuttle had to cope with her parents death and her early years poverty , which she did positively , and Guiseppina had to cope with her immigration problems during the war.
