Non native speakers: •Way of improving your pronunciation of English •Find the pronunciations you can hear from native speakers. Problems: •English spelling > irregular correspondence with pronunciation (exceptions, special cases) > to know how a word is pronounced > pronouncing dictionary. §Most words with "ea" > /h9/ ("tea" "seat" "bean" "read"). But "steak" "break" > /dH/, like "mistake". §Most words with: C "u" C > /U/ ("bus" "cut" "luck" "muck" "lung"). But there is a group of words like "push" "pull" > /T/ •Pronunciation can also differ depending on the function or environment in which the word is said. "that" in isolation = /Czs/ Also in speech = "I want that book" (as a demonstrative) But if it is a conjunction as in "He said that you are wrong" /C?s/ 0 Transcribing is a skill which needs regular practice 0
