Globalization and Insecurity: The Impact of Russia-Ukraine Conflict on Turkey, Apuntes de Lengua y Literatura

This essay explores the relationship between globalization and insecurity, using the russia-ukraine conflict and its impact on turkey as a case study. The potential disruption of trade between russia and turkey due to the conflict has led to economic instability in turkey, resulting in inflation and a decrease in tourism. The essay also discusses how this insecurity can have far-reaching consequences for international relations, affecting not only the directly involved countries but also those that depend on them. The essay draws on references from the wall street journal, 'global politics' by mcgrew and lewis, and 'ontological security in world politics: state identity and the security dilemma' by mitzen.

An insecurity can break alliances This essay tries to compare a current situation with globalization and the insecurity about treaties. The news about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has generated a problem in the economies that depend on these countries such as Turkey. “Turkish economy could get caught in Russia- Ukraine crossfire” (Malsin & Ostroff, 2022); This news identifies how a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine could disrupt trade with turkey, which depends on the import of Russian oil and natural gas. Faced with this event, it should be clarified that an inflation of product was generated in turkey and therefore tourism decreased sharply. How is the term globalization related to this news? “Globalization is a concept which refers to the widening, deepening and acceleration of worldwide connectivity or interconnectedness” (Mcgrew, 1993). Based on this, the treaties between Turkey an Russia were stopped, generating a temporary rupture of their interconnection affecting the 2 countries not only economically but socially. How can this affect the international relations of two countries (Russia and Ukraine)? “This logic begins to work in international politics when a state sees itself as a security seeker, but is unsure of the type of other states and feels threatened by their power” (Mitzen, 2006); However, this external conflict was due to a potential insecurity of Russia against Ukraine because this country wants to have an independent state. Based on this, it can be affirmed that without speaking in economic but social terms, an insecurity or uncertainty of a government can generate a global paralysis as is happening now, were not only these two countries end up affected but also the countries that depend on them directly or indirectly. “Governments and societies now face the challenge of a combination of new problems, such as nuclear weapons, terrorism, climate chaos, limited resources, which increase uncertainty and the need for power between states” (Mitzen, 2006). If a country is insecure about its own ate, its international treaties could bring with it an uncertainty to the allied countries and therefore their relations end up affecting other areas.
