¡Descarga Analysis of Eveline by James Joyce y más Apuntes en PDF de Escribir Ficción solo en Docsity! Dubliners: Pre-modernist collection, It doesn't belong to high fiction. It still contains some of the conventions of realism and naturalism. Some concepts to bear in mind: Narratorial invisibility -> The narrator actually disappears. The narrative voice merges with the characters consciousness. Key aspect of modernist works. The consequence of this is that we cannot rely on the characters, they are unreliable. No authorial omission narrator. Indeterminacy -> How things in modernist fiction are always incomplete, unknowable. We cannot really determine what is really going on. It is represented in the form of omission, absences, ellipsis... Meaning can sometimes be open to interpretations. Interpretations are always tentative. Eveline (1914): Modernist short story of a 19 years old woman who lives in Dublin. She has an abusive father and wants to run away with her lover to Argentina. Remembrance of the past confronts the future. Representation of time is really important as it is Evelin's consciousness of time. An insight into the character consciousness, and how it is travelling across time. Time as something that is experienced subjectively. Time as flexible. Process of modernization of Dublin's landscape. It introduces the story of invasion. Pre-independence of Ireland. We don't know if she had a happy childhood or not because the text doesn't say anything. She could remember her childhood as good times because she in some way compares that times with her current situation. However, we don't know. We as readers are trying to name a feeling and categorize it with its own label because that provides us a sense of safety, and I believe that Modernism is precisely against that. This is a perfect example as indeterminacy, as the reader doesn't know what is going on. Itis a realist beginning as the character is presented, we know the setting, information about her family... However, it is not realist in the narration, so It combines elements of realism and modernism. Realism is transformed by naturalism. Naturalism -> Subgenre of realism or continuation that relies on social Darwinism, the idea of the survival of the fittest and that u depend on nature. If the conditions are appropriate u survive. Idea of determinism, how they cannot overcome their circumstances. Evelin contains some elements of naturalism: The constant mention of life, death and the feeling of being left out by the families that left. Context of violence, death and mental issues. This is the environment she wants to escape from. “Itwas hard work—a hard life” -> The story of how she met Frank. She depicts him as a sailor. Her current anxiety of leaving makes her remember her past. Example of Evelin's consciousness. despite being a violent environment is what she knows and what she is used to. Even she desires to change, the future is uncertain and she is very afraid of it. She tries to hold on to the few good memories she has so she can cope with the suffering. The character of Frank is described as being kind and manly. Not an objective portrait of the character because it is told from Eveline's perspective and consciousness. Frank tells her stories about his adventures, from far away places. They are fictionalised as well, since he is recounting stories that might be truth or not. And, even if they were, how accurate are they?. Reality through imagination. This is a construction of her memories with Frank. We cannot really on the father's ideas, it is still
