Anglo-Saxon invasion In the 4th century, Britain was attacked by Picts and Saxons (they were Vikings from Denmark, north-west Germany and Netherlands). While the Romans were combatting the Barbarians in the Sack of Rome (AD 410), Britons needed the help of the Roman legions to combat the Picts. But Constantin denied help of the Roman army to Britain (Roman was being attacked and Britain wasn’t his problem). But Britons couldn’t combat the Picts themselves and Roman civilisation in Britain disintegrated, so they paid Saxons to help them combat the Picts. This is known as the Dark Ages, and there’s not so much information about this period. Britons couldn’t hold back the Saxons who came across the North Sea, and attacked the east and south-east coast of Britain. Vortigern, a British leader, employed two Saxons warriors, Hengist and Horsa, to defend the country; instead, they appropriated part of the south-east and the invasion continued, due to they considered the payment to fight the Picts insufficient, they began fighting the Britons, so they settled down (got marry with the daughters of a of Briton king) and brought fellows from Germany. The Britons rallied in the west (Welsh and Cornwall) under the legendary King Arthur. Angles also come from Germany as well as Jutes from Jutland (Denmark). In the 5th century Angles and Saxons held the land form the Humber River to the island of Wight (south). Irish people settle west England and Scotland. Cornwall and Devon were independent from roman Britons, as well as Gwynadd, Powys and North Scotland. But roman Britons moves gradually to these places as Anglo-Saxons came. Anglo-Saxons lived in the field; they didn’t liked cities, which made them very similar to Celts. They were pagans and brought their religion as well as their language (which is the origin of our nowadays English language). Celts before the romans, romans before Constantin and roman Britons were pagans, so there were no problems until Constantin become emperor in the 3-4th century. Then, the new official religion of the Roman Empire was the Christianism, but roman Britons staid pagans, as well as Anglo-Saxons population did when they came to the island. Later, roman Britons would accept Christianism too. Irish missionaries began to come to the north of the island in order to convert those Anglo-Saxon people. Pope Gregory, after had seen some Angles slaves for sale in Rome and become Pope, also sent missionaries led by St Augustine that arrived by the south of the island and established the ecclesiastic capital of Canterbury. Christianity was brought to Ireland in the 5th century by St Patrick, who was captured by Irish pirates as slave, but he achieved to escape to Rome, and returned to Ireland in order to bring the faith back to his captors, so Ireland become Christian rapidly, and sent missionaries who brought Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons in the north, as well as Scotland and Welsh.
