Josimar Coronado Cabrera 2016-0458. “What do we do when antibiotics don’t work anymore” In the conference “what do we do when antibiotics don’t work anymore” presented by Maryn McKenna, expressed that today 70,000 people are dying because of the era of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics were designed to fight infections. Of course, this has been one of the greatest medical advances of the past 100 years, but many health experts warn that we are entering a post- antibiotic era, where drug-resistant “superbugs” are affecting our lives because of the irrational abuse of antibiotics. 80% of antibiotics sold in USA are for animals, no for humans. As we can see, this is alarming because even if people propose measures to avoid the massive use of antibiotics, this activity, mostly in farms, are leading to the increase of resistance and also, without knowledge, every day we´re eating a antibiotics cocktail. What concerns me is the high amount of antibiotics that are destinated just for prevention, and to complete, for animals, for me this is unacceptable, and this is just the reason why we can express that we are wasting resources when there are people with real illness caused by bacteria’s, that need those medications. If we don´t put this under control, for 2050 there will be over 10 million deaths a year. Just like Maryn said, “resistance is an inevitable biological process, but we are the responsible for the acceleration”, and all of this is because we are using irrationally the antimicrobial like there is no tomorrow. In the USA 50% of the antibiotics given in hospitals are unnecessary, just with this fact we can see how bad we are, so, if we continue like this soon, we will live the end of modern medicine where simple things, just like stomach infection, will lead to a million’s deaths. Finally, is inevitable that evolution always wins, in fact, antimicrobial resistance is the perfect example of it. We must keep in mind that bacteria multiply exponentially, so every time we use antibiotics without being necessary, we are giving away new resistant genes to these microorganisms. Naturally, the world reduced antibiotic that we need to live in, will be difficult, but it is vital to prevent all of humanity from living in a post-antibacterial world.
