In 1958 and 1959, at the height of the Cold War, Washington deployed ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads in Italy and Turkey, NATO member countries that sought to stop Soviet expansion. 2. Since 1959, the Cuban Revolution has promoted several socialist measures, some of which, like the Agrarian Reform Law, affected U.S. interests on the island. In response, the Eisenhower administration initiated a political agenda aimed at overthrowing the newly installed socialist regime. 3. Because of its proximity to the United States, such a missile base could potentially violate that country, compensating for the scarce Soviet supply of intercontinental-range missiles, thus matching the threat posed to the Soviet people by medium-range missiles.
