BURIED​ ​CHILD​ ​AS​ ​A​ ​POSTMODERNIST​ ​PLAY 1940s​ ​--​ ​Modernism​ ​starts​ ​to​ ​change​ ​to​ ​become​ ​in​ ​Postmodernism​ ​in​ ​1960s. In​ ​Buried​ ​Child​ ​we​ ​can​ ​find​ ​many​ ​important​ ​elements​ ​of​ ​Postmodernism.​ ​Pastiche​ ​is​ ​one​ ​of them,​ ​the​ ​play​ ​mixes​ ​different​ ​styles​ ​like: - Classical​ ​myths​ ​(oedipus,​ ​Saturn). - Biblical​ ​themes​ ​(prodigal​ ​son,​ ​Samson,​ ​Corn​ ​king/Christ). - Sacred​ ​rituals​ ​(buried​ ​and​ ​corn). - Murder​ ​and​ ​mystery​ ​stories​ ​(American​ ​-​ ​rural​ ​gothic). - Domestic​ ​realism. - Surrealism/​ ​Expressionism. ❖ The​ ​representation​ ​of​ ​a​ ​life​ ​and​ ​characters​ ​in​ ​which​ ​coherence,​ ​unity​ ​and​ ​center​ ​seems to​ ​be​ ​fading​ ​away. ❖ The​ ​characters​ ​suffer​ ​from​ ​a​ ​lack​ ​of​ ​sustained​ ​unity​ ​to​ ​keep​ ​them​ ​together.​ ​Unlike​ ​the unified​ ​and​ ​coherent​ ​figures​ ​of​ ​modern​ ​dramas,​ ​Shepard​ ​seems​ ​to​ ​portray​ ​his characters​ ​as​ ​voids. ❖ The​ ​postmodern​ ​focus​ ​is​ ​evident​ ​within​ ​the​ ​characterizations​ ​that​ ​Shepard​ ​offers​ ​as well.​ ​The​ ​family​ ​life​ ​that​ ​Dodge​ ​and​ ​Halie​ ​have​ ​created​ ​is​ ​far​ ​from​ ​the​ ​generational embrace​ ​of​ ​traditional​ ​roles​ ​and​ ​reverential​ ​positions. ❖ Shepard’s​ ​treatment​ ​of​ ​Dodge​ ​is​ ​Postmodern,​ ​criticizing​ ​the​ ​idea​ ​of​ ​patriarch​ ​who guides​ ​his​ ​family​ ​with​ ​the​ ​utmost​ ​of​ ​emotional​ ​sincerity.​ ​Ex:​ ​​“You​ ​think​ ​just​ ​because people​ ​propagate​ ​they​ ​have​ ​to​ ​love​ ​their​ ​offspring?...​ ​You​ ​never​ ​seen​ ​a​ ​bitch​ ​eat​ ​her puppies?” ❖ Buried​ ​Child​ ​demonstrates​ ​a​ ​degree​ ​of​ ​language​ ​fragmentation​ ​that​ ​is​ ​one​ ​of​ ​the prominent​ ​aspects​ ​of​ ​postmodernist​ ​aesthetic​ ​production.​ ​In​ ​the​ ​course​ ​of​ ​the​ ​play most​ ​of​ ​the​ ​characters​ ​are​ ​unwilling​ ​to​ ​say​ ​anything,​ ​but​ ​at​ ​the​ ​same​ ​time​ ​they​ ​need​ ​to talk,​ ​“to​ ​avoid​ ​falling​ ​into​ ​vacuum”. ❖ The​ ​setting​ ​--​ ​The​ ​traditional​ ​landscape​ ​of​ ​the​ ​rural​ ​and​ ​pastoral​ ​condition​ ​is​ ​critiqued by​ ​showing​ ​a​ ​decaying​ ​farm​ ​where​ ​nothing​ ​grows.​ ​The​ ​idea​ ​that​ ​the​ ​land​ ​is​ ​barren​ ​is​ ​a
