Piaget’s Stage: Concrete Operational Thought refinement of all cognitive skills that were present in preschoolers. Metacognition: thinking about the fact that we are thinking. Conservation requires that children differentiate between necessary truths (requires logic to understand) and contingent truths (no logical required; we know that is snowing because we see snowflakes). Classification: it allows children to impose an abstract structure on the things around them. At this stage, they are able to understand categories at a more advanced way. Hierarchical Classification vs. Matrix Classification. No more centration issues at this age. Information Processing • Attention greatly improved abilities to control attention. Children at this age, are becoming on systematic, flexible, organized and selecting. • Memory • Memory Capacity more information in long term memory available, that we are able to use while during another task. • Memory Strategies ■ Mnemonic strategies: intentional goal directed behavior designed to improve memory. (Deliberately going to design this acronym to improve my memory). ■ Rehearsal ■ Organization ■ Elaboration
