DEFINITIONS CELTS: They are the first evidence of a social unit. (6th century B.C., Iron Age ) TRIBES: Group of celt people who lived like families. DRUIDS: They were priests or advisers of the celtic tribes in Britain. CHIEFTAIN: He was the leader of the celt tribe. He was always a warrior who led the fights. CLAUDIAN CONQUEST: It was the conquest of Britannia by the Romans . (1st century A.C.) CARTIMANDUA: She was the Brigante ´s queen. She signed a treaty with the Romans to do not attack them. BOUDICCA: She was the queen of the Iceni tribe. She organised a revolt against the Romans. After her husband´s death, Prasugatus , the Romans started to conquest the Iceni lands, breaking the agreement with Prasugatus . So, Boudicca sent her peopled to a revolt, in which three Roman centres were destroyed and some 70.000 people killed. At the end , the revolt was supressed and Boudicca captured and sentenced to die, but she took a poision and died. ADRIAN´S WALL: It is a wall built by the Romans to divided their territories to the Celtic lands. ( 2nd century A.C.) ANTONINE WALL: It is a stone fortification built by the Romans across the Central Scotland. It was a second barrier(barrera) of the Roman Empire. What did it divide? PITS: they were the original celts from Scotland. (4ht century A.C.) SCOTS: They were the original celts from Ireland. HENGIST AND HORGA: They were two Saxon brothers who helped to Vortigern( British leader in the south-east coast of Britain) in the fight against the Saxons. MOUNT BADOM: it is where took place the most important battle between Anglo-Saxons and Britons .The west remained British , though intermarriage with Saxons and, later, conversión to Christianism must have lessened the differences between two people.(5th century A.C.) HEPTARCHY: It the name applied to the Anglo-Saxons seven kingdoms : Northumbria , Mercia ; kent, East Anglia, Sussex, Wessex, Essex. (7th century A.C.) COMITATUS: they were a group of soldiers who supported the King and the chiefs. They were advisers and they approved the new King. SUTTON HOO: It is the most important Saxon treasure. In all probability it belonged to King Raedwald of East Anglia. In that period , the Kings buried thir treasure with them . AETHERELD OF KENT: He wasthe first King who became to be Christian. (6th century A.C.) ST PATRICK , ST COLUMBA: They christianized Ireland and Scotland respectively. SYNOD OF WHITBY: It is was the place where the Roman Church and the Celtic Church decided that the English Church would follow the Roman model . Although the Celtic Christianity persisted in Scotland, Wales and Ireland.(7th century A.C.) HOUSE OF WESSEX: It was a family who had the power over England from 7th century until 11th century . KING ALFRED: he was the first Anglo-Saxon King who fought in the raids against the vikings. (9th century)(¿?) PEACE OF EDINGTON(878): England was partitioned between Saxons(Wessex) and Vikings (Danelaw). Guthrum(viking King) and Alfred (saxon king) signed a agreement to finish the battle. THE WITAN: Group of people composed by noblemen, bishops and men of influence in the local goverment. The funtion of the Witan was the approval of a new king and to advise the king when it was necessary. They were called before :Comitatus. KING EDGAR: Alfred´s grandson. He was the first king that unified England .(10th century) BENEDICTINE REFORM: It is an attempt to rebuild monasteries and force monks to live there again. That reform took place during Edgar´s reign. The Reform was beneficial for the King because the church made propaganda of the England like a united kingdom, that´swhy the king and his noblemen pay the reform. REGULARIS CONCORDIA: It was a document establishing all St benedict´s rules which the monks would should follow.(10th century) AETHELRED II: He was the Edgar´s sucesor . So, he became King of England. He married with Emma of Normandy . He died fighting against the vikings. CNUT I: He was the leader of the vikings. He became king of England after defeating Edgar. He married with Emma . EMMA OF NORMANDY: Daughter of Richard I , Duke of Normandy. HAROLD I: He was the illegitime son of Cnut . He reigned while his brother Harthecnut(Cnut II) was fighting in Scandinavia. CNUT II: He was the legitime son of Cnut and Emma. He was the king of England after his brother Harold. He died without offspring , so Edward would be the king.(11th century) EDWARD THE CONFESSOR: He was the first Anglo- Saxon king after Cnut II´s death . Son of Emma and Aethelred. He married Godwin´s daugther, but they hadn´t children. GODWIN: He was earl of Wessex. He had a lot of power . He was sent to the exile by tensions with the king Edward. HAROLD GODWINSON ( HAROLD II): Godwin´s son, Edward´s brother in law. He became the new earl of Wessex, when his father died. After Edward´s death he was chosen King of England by the Witan. TOSTIG: Harold´s brother. He became earl of Northumbria. But the pople of Northumbria revolted against him and he was exiled.He was quiet jealous of his brother.
