CULTURE I AMERICANS ARE: -Proud of their diversity. -Hard working. -Efficient. -Puntual. -Independet. -Assertive. AMERICANS LIKE: -Earning money. -Living a life of comfort. -Saving time. -Using technology. -Their democratic lifestyle. IMMIGRATION CAUSES: -Religious persecution. -Food shortage. -Economic problems. -Wars and revolution. -Working and educative better conditions. ♦ Christianity (belief in the teching of Jesus Christ) has always been the dominat american faith.Today,about 86% of americans are Christian (approximately 59% Protestan and 27% Catholic). ♦ American Christians are divided into many different groups,including Roman Catholic,the various nation denomination of the Eastern Orthodox churches,and hundreds of different Protestant denomination and sects. ♦ In most religious,the ide of life after death refers to a spiritual life rather than a physical life.Life after death to eternal life,which continues forever. ♦ POLYGAMY is illegal in The Unites States and is also generally considered a sin. ♦ Some people believe that God not exist,these people are called ATHEIST. ♦ A teacher cannot display a prayer in a public school classroom.That would be against that because it would violate laws about separation of chruch and state. ♦ A CONGREGATION is a group of people who attend the same indivudual church of synagogue.They often say prayer together. ♦ Secular activities do not involve religion. “THE GOALS AND PURPOSE OF PUBLIC EDUCATION”  In the U.S.A,everyone has boththe right and the obligation to become educated.  The first year at elementary school is called KINDERGARTEN. "Religion in American life" "American Education: The First 12 years" ♦ Two factors the high divorce rate and the large number of children born to unmarried mothers deprive millions children of daily contact with their father.Some see their fathers on a weekly basis,but,if the parents live in different parts of the country,Dad may become an infrequent companion. ♦ In some households,there is not mother.In others,the father is unemployed or a full time student.But the occupation of house husband is usually temporary career,not a permanet one.In homes where parents share childrearing responsabilities,children may spend about the same amount of time with each parent. ♦ If parents and children aren’t home much in the American Family,at last the pets are.Dogs and cats are most popular.Birds,fish,small rodents such as guinea pigs and gerbils,and even snakes add companionship and fun to the American family. ♦ Most American children live with their parents at least until they finish high school at age 17 or 18. They may go away to college,leaving some parents sad and lonely in their “empty nest” and others happyto have fewer parental responsabilities.However many young,single adults live with their parents during their college years or return home after college graduation. ♦ In the U.S,it’s common for a family to span four generations from great grandparents to infants. ♦ For babies born today,boys have a life expentancy of 73 and girl’s life expectancy is 79. WHERE IS HOME? ♦ The majority of Americans live in on near large cities,but small town living is still widespread .A suburb (smaller community near a big city) combine the advantages of safer,more intimate,small town life with the recreational and cultural facilities and job opportunities of the big city nearby. ♦ About two thirds of Americans live in home or apartaments that they own,but many people rent their residences. ♦ More than 7 million American live in mobile homes living quarters built on wheels. WHO PAYS THE BILLS? ♦ Mom’s salary helps to buy the things the family wants for example a computer.However,a lot of money is needed not only for things but also for experiences: summer camp for the children or a vacation for the family,lessons in music or sport,religious instruction,and most expensive of all a college education. WHO’S IN CHARGE? ♦ Today’s family tries to be democratic,to give all family memebers some voice in decisions that affect the household. ♦ The democratic approach to family life quarrels.There’s the battle of the sex,when husband and wife fight for control of the family.The there’s sibling rivalry competition and jealousy between brothers and sisters. ♦ Americans also speak of GENERATION GAP the difficult parents have understanding the attitudes and behavior of their children and vice versa. ♦ Married people often have in law problems,especially when parents try to interference in the lives of their married children. ♦ Problems between parents and childrens usualy increase when children become teenagers and want greater freedom to make decisions for themselves. ♦ Teenagers are ambivalent about parental control and help. ♦ Some parents have serious problems with teenagers who quit school,abuse alcohol,run away from home,get involve with gangs,have illegitimate children,or use illegal drugs. PARENTHOOD: A CHOICE ♦ Having or not having children is mostly a matter of choice these days.Couples who don’t want children have access to a wide range of birth control methods and,as a last resort,the option of ABORTION,which has been legal thoughout the U.S. ♦ There is always the posibility of ADOPTION.Some Americans adopt babies or young children from other countries,especially those countries where wars and others tragedies have created a large population of ORPHANS. QUESTIONS 1. What are two reasons that so many American chilldrens live with only one parent? Two factors are the high divorce rate and the large number of children born to unmarried mothers. 2. For mothers,what are two advantages of working? What are two disavantages?
