STORY: 1984, George Orwell NAME: Paula Luz Pedrol CULTURE COLLECTOR (differences and similarities) 1. PAGE: 30 LINES: 14-15 “He had never before seen a woman in the Party with make-up on”. With this phrase we can appreciate that the make-up is unusual for women, and I can’t imagine what make-up will suppose if it is worn by a man, because of the sexism that has been through the ages. In my culture, make-up is a cosmetic that can be used by any person that wants, indepently of his or her genre. Fortunately the stereotype of the false necessity of wake-up in women to feel pretty is less common nowadays, but it still existing. 2. PAGE: 30 LINES: 27-31 “She was goodthinkful, in Newspeak, unable to think a bad thought. She did not like sex. It was just… // ‘Our duty to the party’ Julia had said it for him. Just children. In the totalitarian regime people had only two duties: firstly, serving Big Brother, and secondly, and what we will talk about, is having children. People only can have sex for having children, not for pleasure. This was totally prohibited. In my culture, sex is not for having children. There is so much liberty to have sex with who (always with the consent of the other person or persons) and when you want. There are a lot of types of relations. MY CULTURAL QUESTIONS 1. I only spoke about two aspects of the culture of the book, but there are others that can be very interesting to debate. So I want to know your opinion about this culture. Do you think it is conservative? 2. In the last question I defined this culture with the adjective “conservative”. Can you define this culture with 5 more adjectives? 3. And finally, I want to know your opinion about our culture. Do you think that some aspects should change?
