Social control What is crime: - violation of criminal law, it’s a behaviour that goes against social rules and the fundamental rights - social construction by the state CRIME - a violation of the law which can be subject to prosecution and punishment - which harmful acts are defined as criminal, and the nature of their sanctions, is to some extent culturally and historically relative - acts become defined as criminal through a social process of criminalization - who makes the law? - how is it the law enforced? What makes something a crime? - The law makes the behaviour a crime - The fact that creates physical or psicological harm Social construction of crime is the key concept Many circumstances (social, cultural, historic) influence the definition of what is crime
