EQUALJUS European Network for the Legal www.equal-jus.eu Support of LGBT Rights THE EQUAL JUS PROJECT The project EQUAL JUS –European network for the legal support of LGBT rights is co- financed by the EU Commission under the Programme “Fundamental Rights and Citizenship 2007-2013” and run by several partners based in Italy, France, Poland and Lithuania. Prejudices, stereotypes and hatred affect the full recognition of dignity and freedom of citizens because of their homosexual or bisexual orientation, or because they are transgender people. Despite clear EU principles and a binding Nice Charter, not all Member States ensure the proper implementation of the measures required by the European Union to remove all unlawful distinctions based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In some cases this social and geographic inequality seems particularly difficult to eradicate. Homophobic attitudes and discrimination manifest themselves in public and in private life: workplace, schools, within the family, friends, when addressing public authorities, on the political scene. The project seeks to combat homophobia and transphobia by moving from a general analysis of the fundamental rights as recognized by and within the EU and aims at reaching an increasing awareness among people that European citizenship includes a new dimension for protection of fundamental rights and a push for social inclusion of all individuals. The projects results are represented by the creation of the Lenford Research Centre in Florence (European Research Centre on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity), the website www.equal-jus.eu, a newsletter, a freely accessible legal data-base, legal information and dissemination campaigns, the production of scientific publications, transfer of research results according to best practices, training sessions targeting the legal profession (Central training, Florence 7-10 October 2010), a final international conference in May 2011 as well as in general a positive impact on the index of awareness for LGTB issues in the countries involved in the project. The FINAL CONFERENCE WILL TAKE PLACE IN FLORENCE ON 12-12 MAY 2011 (dates will be confirmed by the end of October together with further details on key-note speakers, registration, call for papers). Legal issues and strategies will be discussed in plenary and parallel sessions. A selection of paper will be published in the conference proceedings.
