LAILA LFARSE EDAU Some emergency measures adopted by governments to stem the rise of COVID cases are too restrictive and constrain (and even suspend) individual freedoms, social and economic rights and global solidarity. To what extent do you agree with this statement? If you die from COVID, it’s natural selection at this point. Governments all around the world have managed this COVID situation in different ways. In some countries, some very restrictive and strict measures have been taken, and citizens have reacted in all sorts of manners. Some think that their individual freedoms, social and economic rights have been constrained by their governments, and refuse to keep obeying. First of all, as far as I´m concerned, the main problem with the current rate of spread of the virus isn’t completely related to the regulations countries take, but mostly with the duration of them and the effect it has in the livelihood of people in the long run, thus making them less and less prone to following said orders. This can cause a lot of casualties because people who don’t know what they’re doing can make others get ill. Secondly, some of the countries with less cases are countries that focused on educating the population instead of greatly reducing their free will. This proves that a smart and educated country will make better decisions not only individually, but also collectively. A good example of this would be Australia, one of the countries that managed to reduce their cases greatly and go back to near-normal life very fast. In third place, a population that is somewhat abused by greatly restrictive regulations will have a lot of trouble having a minimal financial and social stability. This makes for an almost impossible recovery of society once the virus problem is solved that will most likely make the country fall into an economic depression (see Spain, for example). To sum it all up, the regulations and their duration can take a big toll in society and maybe informing and educating people can make a country not fall into an economic and social crisis when the pandemic is over. I, for one, would focus on making the people understand their position in society.
