Increases sensationalism behind the text effects of taking opium mainly writing periodicals first sent to blackwood’s magazine in Edinburgh (rejected because of issues with editor 1820 published in 1821 in London Magazine in instalments 1822 published as a full volume 1856 revised the text and included it in ‘Selections Grave and Gay’ mostly because of the topic Wilke Collins Reflected on dickens novel and the other way round and collaborated Born I 1824, died 1889 Inventor of the sensation novel, the woman in white Was a law student but when he was called to the bar he met Charles dickens (1851) and realised he wanted to be a writer instead Started a really close relationship Dickens famous for his characters were as wilke Collins was a master of plot Working together theycreated some of the most important novels (not acknowledged except for Frozen Deep) Wrote 25 novels, 50 short storeis, 50 plays and more than 100 non fiction stories his best novels ‘the woman in white’ and the moonstone – first detective novel sergeant cuff have been inherited – the idea of combining the priveledged mind iwith an interest in everyday things ‘all the year round’ magazine- one of the magazines created by Charles dickens. Moonstone first serialised in this magazine in 1868. 11 different narrators and all of them speak in the first person narrative voiceas if they were witnesses in a trial journalistic manner, accounting for events that had happened. Novel published in 1868 but is set in 1848 Rachel Verinder receives jewel on her 18th birthday and it is stolen from her room. Knows who did it but wont tell Franklin Blake- suitor of Rachel he acts as the editor of the stories he is told Ezra Jennings- the assistant of the dr in the village and the scientific method used by him to find the thief is the beginning of the style continued through the period ie. Sherlock homes Gabriel Betteredge- clichéd character begins here – the butler.not villain in this case Sergeant cuff – first professional detective developed throughout the novel. Many characteristcs carried through detective tradition I.e Sherlock holmes
