Good and bad teachers - Good teachers: for me, a good teacher is who listen students, who make them feel confident, safe and important, who try to know their problems and needs to help them to improve it or solve it. A person able to undertand students´situations to know what they are going through in life. It is essential to love your job and to be motivated, and of course to transmit this feeling to your students. To end up with, and important skill is to be patient. - Bad teachers: someone who doesn´t listen to kids problems, needs or demands, who doesn´t care about students´ situations. A person who has no motivation or aim, and who make kids feel uncomfortable and that they aren´t important. b. Questions for reflection - Do you think English is an important subject in the Curriculum of Primary Education? Why?/Why not? Of course, English is such an important subject. A language is a key to know how to live and communicate with the world. It is true that in primary school English is only introduced as a foreign language and not as something essential in life. So the Curriculum shows English as something important, but it has to improve a lot the way that we carry out this subject. - What can we teach in an English class? English is not only about grammar and vocabulary, but also about culture, traditions and a lot of aspects of our daily life. So we can teach values, how to act in different situations, we can also teach some historical moments, traditions and, of course, grammar and vocabulary. But the aim is that children can communicate and understand the language at the same time that they learn about life and they mature. - How can we improve the teaching of English? For me, as I have said in a previous question, the problem is that we see English as a foreing language, and not as a key to see the world. So we have to understand that English is not a synonim of grammar and vocabulary, English is life. If we understand this and kids don´t see this subject as an obligations, English classes are going to improve hugely. - How do you think the teaching of English changes in the three cycles of Primary Education? It is obvious that the level increases while we change the cycle. I think that in each cycle, we have to treat different topics, becaause a six years old kid doesn´t understand the same things than an eleven years old one. So the topics change. Obviously the difficulty increases: if we think about activities that we can do in a primary class, the type of activity and the aim of it, is not going to be the same for first cycle than for second or third. - Do you think teachers of English can educate children in their class? How? Yes, they can. Following my point of view, in every subject teacher show kids, not only the information about the subject, but also tools for life, and of course values. So the aim of teachers is to make their students grow and mature, to turn into polite and respectful adults. TASK 2 a. Designing a task (aim and purpose) The aim of the task that I have created is to know each other, to discover what your classmates like and to know some personal experiences that they have been through. The type of task is: sharing personal experiences. What we want to improve is narrating, describing and exploring attitudes, opinions, preferences, reactions… The procedure of this activity is the following one: Each kid has to think about three things about themselves. It could be an experience that they had experienced, some of their likes or dislikes, or *This activity is the easiest one, because kids don´t need a huge understanding of the information, it only requires vocabulary. Level 2 Students should describe their favourite instrument: shape, color, sound, type of instrument (family)… They can also add some extra information like famous musicians of that instrument or some famous songs. *This activity is more difficult than the previous one, because kids need to know the instrument and some information about it. Level 3 Students are going to discuss about which instrument is the hardest to play. *This task is the hardest because it is essential to know basic information about all the instruments and about how they work. Task 4 The author I was given is Piaget. Here is the information I´ve searched and shared with my group. PIAGET Jean Piaget was a Swiss psyccologist who contribute to the understanding of children,s development. The main features of Piaget’s educational theory Piaget offered a unique experimental method for determining children’s cognitive abilities, as well as a detailed explanation of how children develop logical and mathematical thinking. According to Piaget: Development is understood as an increase in the complexity, mobility and systemisation of cognitive structures. Piaget saw thinking (the ability to reason, connect ideas and solve problems) as the result of cognitive structures that are gradually built within the brain as a result of direct exposure to and interaction with the environment. Learning is a process of adaptation to environmental stimuli, involving successive periods of what Piaget called assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration Learning is dependent not only on experience but also on students’ maturation and their ability to absorb and learn from stimuli. Social factors have an important role in students’ knowledge construction, as children gain knowledge both individually and by observing and acting with others in groups. Peer discussion which generates cognitive conflict is seen as a critical factor in cognitive development. What Are the Piaget Stages of Development? Piaget's stages of development are part of a theory about the phases of normal intellectual development, from infancy through adulthood. This includes thought, judgment, and knowledge. The stages were named after psychologist and developmental biologist Jean Piaget, who recorded the intellectual development and abilities of infants, children, and teens. Piaget's four stages of intellectual (or cognitive) development are: - Sensorimotor Stage: infants are only aware of what is right in front of them. They focus on what they see, what they are doing, and physical interactions with their immediate environment. - Preoperational Stage:, young children are able to think about things symbolically. Their language use becomes more mature. They also develop memory and imagination, which allows them to understand the difference between past and future, and engage in make-believe. - Concrete Operational Stage: Children's thinking becomes less focused on themselves. They're increasingly aware of external events. They begin to realize that their own thoughts and feelings are unique and may not be shared by others or may not even be part of reality. But during this stage, most children still can't think abstractly or hypothetically. - Formal Operational Stage: Adolescents are able to use symbols related to abstract concepts, such as algebra and science. They can think about things in systematic ways, come up with theories, and consider possibilities. They also can ponder abstract relationships and concepts such as justice. What is Assimilation Assimilation is an adaptation process by which new information is taken into the previously existing schema. This is how humans perceive and adapt to new ideas. Here, the learner fits the new idea into what he already know. Assimilation occurs when someone makes use of the pre- existing knowledge to make sense of the new knowledge. Therefore, we can say that assimilation tends to be subjective. What is Accommodation Accommodation is the process by which pre-existing knowledge is altered in order to fit in the new information. A new schema might be created in this process. This happens when the existing knowledge is not accurate. It is important to note that both assimilation and accommodation are interrelated processes and are vital to the intellectual growth of a human. Now, here is some information that my classmates share with me about other authors. VYGOTSKY What Is the Zone of Proximal Development? The zone of proximal development refers to the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can achieve with guidance and encouragement from a skilled partner. Thus, the term “proximal” refers to those skills that the learner is “close” to mastering. Vygotsky believed that when a student is in the zone of proximal development for a particular task, providing the appropriate assistance will give the student enough of a "boost" to achieve the task. What Is the Vygotsky theory? There are three fundamental concepts that define sociocultural theory: (1) social interaction plays an important role in learning, (2)
