Bridging generation gaps Nowadays, more and more parents and grandparents seem to be fighting a battle against younger generations with the aim of preserving their traditional ways of lives. With recent developments in technology and the fast growth of society, people’s lifestyle has changed considerably. This has caused differences in behaviors, values, beliefs and views of life between older and younger generations which is called generation gap. Of these two generations, parents are the most critical about children’s customs, habits and attitudes towards life without realizing that they are also members of a new modern society that forces them to adjust to new trends and requirements. To start with, the advent of technology has made parents concern about its roles in their children’s life. For instance, video games, cell phones and the Internet have become one of the main forms of entertainment for young people, which is highly criticized by parents. They strongly argue that technology has a negative impact on their children’s academic performance and social life since it only devotes their minds to unnecessary regions and makes them waste time that can be used for studying and playing sport or doing other social and recreational activities. Nowadays, it is usual to hear parents complaining about the fact that their young children spend long hours sitting in front of their computers and laptops chatting and emailing their friends or playing video while in the past they had healthier ways of entertainment such as playing board games, collecting stamps, playing with dolls, and running outside. Parents claim that these pastime activities were healthier than today’s forms of entertainment which are influenced by the negative effects of technology. Generation gap between parents and younger people is also caused by differences in attitudes towards life. Many parents feel that when they were young boys and girls, they were better behaved than today’s children are. They argue that they used to show more respect for older people and that they were more obedient, more submissive and more willing to respect their parents’ rules, listen to their parents’ advices and follow the examples set by the elder. However, it is important to consider that this generation gap between young people and their parents is caused by a lack of communication between one generation and another. Therefore, everything would be easily solved by talking and accepting each other. Parents do the mistake of evaluating children by comparing their own ways of lives with their children’s. Instead of criticizing and trying to set examples about their past habits, they should struggle to cope up with the generation gap by being updated with the new advances in technologies and adapting to the new needs of the fast growing society.
