TOPIC 2 Practical 2 GENDER INEQUALITY Equal pay for equal work 1.- Do you think that the pay gap is the only problem that women have to face at work? Could you name others? No, there are other problems such as the maternity leave, because in some jobs you cannot be sure enough if you will keep your job after it. Maybe the discrimination just because you are a woman, if your boss mentality is sexist... 2.- The documentary focuses on white women from technologically advanced country, do you think women from other countries or other ethnic communities have the same problem? What kind of difference can you see? if you see anyone In my opinion they have the same problem but not as a whole exactly thing. In other countries | think that they might work in jobs that are more exhausting and in worse conditions because they are really bad jobs, such as working the land while the man can be selling food in a shop. If not, | believe women are just at home taking care of children and taking care of the house while men are working. This is for the poorest countries. 3.- Years ago, not so many, it was perfectly legal to pay women less than men, and then in just a few decades things changed. How far do you think the things have been changed? | think that it has changed, but it must keep improving in aspects such as maternity. We must delete the idea that men can do work better that women, and until that point, we won't change the society and equate it. 4.- According to the documentary, what is the first cause of the gender pay gap? Lower education rates, there were more, but this was the first one. 6.- When does the glass ceiling emerge in women's careers? And why is that? lt appears when they have children, but it should not be like that, both father and mother should have the same responsibilities with their child and opportunities at work. 7.- The documentary talks about two countries that they have almost closed their wage gaps. could you name those two countries and explain how they have achieved it? The 2 countries are Iceland and Rwanda. Iceland did it after a strike in 1975, where women went out in the streets in order to object to the gender pay gap. After that, a woman was elected as democratic president for the first time. They also did it by policy changes like giving to both of them, women and men, maternity and paternity leaves from work, so when they had to be employed, bosses knew that everyone could ask for this, and they wouldn't underestimate women. Rwanda did it after 800.000 people in Rwanda were murdered in 1994, and a 60-70% of population that remained were women, so government realized that they needed women to survive and to rebuild the country. They created new legacies in which women were involved into the government and could do every type of job. 8.-The documentary ends by stating that the pay gap is not just a woman issues is at family issue, why do you think they say that? do you agree with them? | believe that they say that because at the end, the woman is part of a family and if this pay gap affect the woman it's also going to affect the entire family. And this can happen either with the man's wage or the women's one. 9. Are you for or against public policies aimed to shrink the wage gap? lam for in these types of policies which try to reduce this gap and try to reach equality between man and women, but | am not with the policies which make one better than other, both are equal. 10. What public police do you propose to reduce the wage gap? I would propose a policy for small business in which if one of their workers have to ask for the maternity or paternity living, this business would receive a help from the State which supplied the loss of human labour that this period of time were the worker is not in the company would mean. 11. Do you think that affirmative action policies for combating gender discrimination or any other discrimination work effectively? Explain why
