Higher Institute for Teacher Training No.18 Student: Maria Agustina Cima Teacher: Verónica Schulz TOPIC: Multiculturalism and Interculturalism Date of expiring: May 9th, 2021 1) Explain multiculturalism and interculturalism with your own words Multiculturalism: It’s the prescence and acceptation of the diversity of all-type ethnicities in a determined place (most precisely, a country). They don’t need to stay in contact among them to be so. Interculturalism: A way to approach different cultures of diverse nationalities in a determined place. Every single individual from a specific country shares to the other people either a food, a typical garment, a belief, a typical custom, etc. Unlike multiculturalism, they MUST interact with each other. 2) What interculturslism is about. The British Council Activity In this text you have the transcription of the video. The text has been divided into sections to facilitate the completion of the activity. Before each section, you will have phrases that have been removed from the text. Write these phrases in the correct place. Take into account not only the meaning the phrase, but also that it should fit the grammatical structure of the sentence. Proceed as follows: Work with one section at a time What assimilation policies are about Assimilation is a policy framework that seeks to absorb differences as quickly as possible to create a homogenous group of people . For instance, newcomers would be expected to give up their heritage when they arrive in a new country in order to become part of the dominant culture. Their differences from the cultural norms of the host community would not be encouraged and may even be discouraged or suppressed if they are considered a threat to the integrity of the majority group. The challenge for assimilationalist policies is that people may feel resentful if obliged to deny their background, and reluctant to assume the values, rules and customs of the dominant culture if this is imposed on them. They may disengage from society altogether. Moreover, assimilationalist policies are unsustainable in a world which is losing its borders in a technological, social and economic relationship. As such, they do not experience the benefits of harmonious diversity that are enjoyed in others countries Multiculturalism vs. Interculturalism The prefix multi means many, so multicultural society is one in which many cultures coexist. Accommodating many cultures does not however mean that a society will be intercultural Individuals, families and communities of different cultural, language and faith backgrounds may in fact live paralell lives and not interact with each other. if the policy frame overemphasizes diversity without building on the bonds that unite people It is interaction that makes a society intercultural. Furthermore, as we have already seen, people’s identities are multidimensional, and influenced by the way in which some attributes such as their age, gender, disability and class intersect with other elements of their background such as ethnicity, culture, language and faith. Multiculturalism often does not allow for the recognition of these development, and classifies individuals into one-dimensional boxes. This can sometimes create a society intercultural parallel lives and not interact with each other separation, marginalization or segregation of diverse cultural groups a society will be intercultural the bonds that unite people circumstances that in practice lead to separation , margilinization or segregation of diverse cultural groups Key elements of the intercultural practice.  To further understand the concept of interculturalism, let us take into account a number of elements and practices that authorities and policy makers should consider as key principles 1- Developing a positive attitude towards diversity Symbolism and open demonstrations to support diversity play a very important role in the community’s acceptance as well as in the normalization of differences in culture, language and faith within a community. Positive leadership by political representatives and other leaders is sessential to promote understanding and dialogue, raise awareness with regards to the benefits of diversity and reduce any fear of the other. 2- Assessing the city through an “intercultural lens” Using an “intercultural lens” means rebuild all areas of urban policies with regards of their impact on identities and the mutual perceptions within different communities. Housing policies, for example, can often influence the nature and visibility of interculturral interaction. How neighbourhoods evolve as locations for homogenious or mixed cultural diversity creates perceptions about the success of integration in a local area. Communities which lack diversity reinforce stereotypes and develop shared prejudices. In addition, the way in which migrant-owned businesses are supported to be established and grow can be influenced at the local level. Activities such as facilitating mentoring relationships between migrant and other business’ owners can assist in providing information and support to migrants to better understand business compliance laws. Furthermore, interaction will supply people with an opportunity to co-develop innovative products and services. 3- Mediation and conflict resolution. communities which lack diversity open demo nstrations to support diversity improve communication and dynamism potential conflict is a natural part of social interaction develop shared prejudices P otential conflict is a natural part of social interaction , especially when individuals of different cultural, social and economic backgrounds live in close proximity. Not only should conflict neither be ignrored nor denied, but its identification and resolution should be seen as a good opportunity to create intercultural understanding, dispel rumours and improve communication and dynamism. Mediation and conflict resolution approaches, such as community training for intercultural mediators, may be actions to address and resolve potential conflict at the local level. understanding and acceptance of diversity the language capacities of the whole community the promotion of positive attitudes must be able to speak the language of the host community equal respect for all languages and mutual learning 4- Languages One of the most important elements of intercultural inclusion is the ability to communicate. To participate in everyday life, enjoyment and education, to enjoy one’s rights, to understand the laws and systems to fulfil one’s duties, and to make friends outside their own cultural group, new residents must be able to speak the language of the host community. At the same time, the aim of intercultural approach is to foster equal respect for all languages and mutual learning across language divides. In fact, a positive attitude towards language diversity contributes to better understanding, as well as people’s well-being and development of identities of non-native speakers, also increasing the language capacities of the whole community 5- Intercultural messaging The promotion of positive attitudes with regards to migration and the value of diversity in the mass media is critical to community perceptions, understanding and acceptance of diversity Key messages need to be crafted according to specific issues and needs of the community. Campaigns and communication strategies may be developed for the written press, television, radio and social networks, providing the mass and social media with positive stories about diversity.
