SCHOOL IN WHICH THE COURSE IS LOCATED: School of Social Sciences. COURSE SCHEDULE: Morning, from 9:00am to 14:00pm, Monday to Friday. COURSE DURATION: 75 hours in English and 25 in Spanish. NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 40. STUDENT PROFILE: All Social Sciences backgrounds, studens or graduates, especially Law, Political Sciences, Information Sciences and History, with an interest in the political and legal aspects of international relations, Arab and Islamic studies. In addition, special training students such as diplomats, soldiers, officials, teachers, theologians, etc, are admitted. COURSE OBJECTIVES:  To provide students with a complete vision of the Islamic world, analysing Islam with the greatest possible objectivity, in its unity of culture and religion, its fundamental religious principles, its relationship with human rights, as well as its enduring influence in the West and the possibilities of new dialogues between the two cultures.  To deepen the specific aspects of Islam in its various manifestations, including existing and emergent religious and political trends.  To analyse the impact of Islam on the individual societies of the students, as well as its impact on the wider world.  To objectively and analytically address the controversial issues surrounding the Islamic faith, such as the position of women in Islam, radicalism, and issues of religious education.  To discuss and analyse major conflicts in the Islamic world, such as the current conflict in the Middle East and the long-running tensions among the Gulf States. Fundación General de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.  To study the existing and emergent initiatives for improved dialogue between the West and the Islamic World, such as the Euro-Arab and Euro-Mediterranean dialogues.  To use learning and debate as tools to overcome the confusion that is often fostered by the mass media reporting on Islam and the Islamic world whilst highlighting the positive role the media can play in the formation of a more objective and balanced opinion. PROGRAM CONTENT:  Islam and the State.  Islam and politics.  The Islamic State.  Islam and Democracy.  The political structures of Islamic States.  Identity and diversity of Ummah.  Islamism as the political revival of Islam.  The regionalisms of the Islamic World.  Islamic Concepts in International Relations.  Legal schools and sources of Islamic Law.  The relationship between Sharia and Islamic international law.  The development of Dar al-Islam and an Islamic society.  The nature of international relations in Islam.  The theory of Jihad and just war.  Colonisation and Decolonisation in the 20th Century Islamic World.  Distinguishing the concepts of the Arab World and the Muslim World.  The geopolitical importance of the Arab World.  The decline of the Ottoman Empire.  Arab nationalism and Islamic movements at the end of the 19th Century.  World War I and the fall of the Ottoman Empire.  The colonial division of the Arab World.  The effects of World War II on the Arab region.  Arab nationalism and the National Liberation Movements.  Political Transitions in the Islamic World.  Regional political structures and the needs of change.  The confluence of the cyclical and structural factors as causes of political transitions.  Expectations of political changes in the short, medium, and long terms and their effects on the relationships of the Islamic World.  Conflict in the Middle East and its effects on the Western-Islamic International Relationship.  The colonisation and decolonisation in the 20th Century Middle East.  The creation of the State of Israel and the Arab reaction.  The Western relationship to the Palestinian question.  The War of 1967.  The War of 1973.  The Camp David Accords the its regional affects.  The Arab-Israeli peace process.  The various positions of the Western World on current conflicts in the Middle East.  The Gulf Wars.  The Iranian Islamic Revolution.  The first Gulf War: causes and consequences.  The second gulf War: the invasion of Kuwait and its regional and global affects.  The third Gulf War: the invasion of Iraq and international responsibilities.
