KUBRICK AND THE CAMERA -Stanley Kubrick got his first camera at the age of thirteen, his father gaved him for his birthday a 'Graflex' (some people say that was a Kodak Monitor 620). From this point Kubrick started developing a huge interest in camera work and later in cinema His first 'work' was a photo of a newpaper seller who was looking at the front page of one of his own products, he sold it to the 'Look' magazine for 25 dollars in 1945. Since this moment he was working for the magazine and travelled all around the USA. He was able to express himself freely with his own creativity in his pictures. In 2005 Rainier Crone published 'Stanley Kubrick: Drama and Shadows: Photographies 1945-1950', in which were shown Kubrick's photos, which were analysed in depth.. His Pictures show the 'forgotten and condemned' people., sometimes with a silly perspective -During his long career as a filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick got himself a reputation of a control-obsessed perfectionist who often re-shoots scenes hundreds of times, driving crazy actors and actresses. In 1955, after some works (that included short films and 'Fear and Desire') he published 'Killer's Kiss', in which we could see some of Kubrick's photography characteristics (as a filmmaker). The usage of the wide-angle lens, that provide a great depth of field and lead to most of the frame within the "focus" if it has sufficient light levels, and the regular use of the available light in different locations. This latter was one of his constants during his career and probably an influence when he was a photographer, although in the interior he was forced to use harsh lights due to the camera conditions of the period. However , he took advantage of this to create interesting plays of light and shadows. -Later, in 'The Killing' he was focused on the writer/director work. Was Lucien Ballard who became the photograph director of the film. Kubrick and Ballard didn't trust each other because of some technical and decisions missunderstandings that they were having during the filmmaking. It is said that when they were about to shoot a scene, Kubrick had planned a travelling pretty complicated to shoot with a 50mm lens, and ordered ballard to prepare it and to illumante it correctly while he was working with the actors. When Stanley came back he realised that the traveling was not placed where ordered and the lens was replaced by a 25 mm.Kubrick asked Ballard the reason for the change , and he told him that no one would notice the difference and it would make his job a lot easier. Kubrick replied " I do notice the difference " and the plane was shot as he had originally planned .The photography of the film wasn't very different from what was usually done in the 50's in black and white, but it does contain many of Kubrick's favorite choices of lenses and we began
