Indefinite • Some/Any • Both may be used as a determiner or pronoun (pronunciation of some changes). • Traditionally, we talk about some being used in affirmative sentences and any in negative and questions. ■ Some also appears in questions ■ Any also appears in affirmative sentences. • Examples • Some or any as pronouns: ■ Would you like a piece of cake? No thanks, I don’t care for any. ■ Well, I’ll take some”. • Some or any in questions and affirmative sentences: ■ Do you have some advice for me? ■ I’ll take any help you can give me. Negative Qualifiers • No vs. not (none) • No is independent or modifies a noun (adjective/qualifier/determiner). • Not modifies a verb (adverb). • None is a negative pronoun • NOTE: English avoids double negatives (including negative words like hardly, etc…). Quantities • Much vs. many • There is a distinction between count and non-count. • They may be used as determiners, pronouns (in the case of much as an adverb). ■ Determiner:
