Depression is one of the main causes of impairment among adolescents worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), underscoring the significant effects of mental disease on this population. In addition, suicide is the second greatest cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 29, which emphasizes the critical need for efficient support networks and intervention. It's critical to understand that adolescent mental health problems are shaped by a complex web of interrelated causes rather than being isolated events. Teenage mental health issues can arise and worsen because of cultural standards, social pressures, economic inequality, and environmental stressors. Furthermore, notable differences are present between people and locations, with certain groups being more vulnerable than others because of things like poverty, violence, and restricted access to medical care. Teenagers who grow up in impoverished or conflict-affected areas are especially vulnerable to mental health problems because they must deal with extra pressures and traumas that worsen their psychological suffering. To address the unique needs of vulnerable populations and guarantee fair access to mental health resources, it is imperative to acknowledge these differences and customize interventions and support systems accordingly. In general, a thorough grasp of the complex nature of adolescent mental health concerns is essential to creating methods that effectively support adolescent wellbeing and lessen the negative effects of untreated or inadequately managed mental illness. 13-02-2024 page 1 GAC027 - 028 ESNI187143 Natalia Falasco According to an annual survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the percentage of American teenagers who had at least one major depressive episode in the previous year increased to 14.4% in 2018. That is nearly twice as high as the 7.9 percent figure from 2006. However, the percentage of 12 to 17-year-olds receiving treatment for these episodes has remained relatively stable at 40% of those affected over the previous few years, rather than rising significantly. For individuals with one or more depressive episodes and severe impairment (e.g., missing important deadlines at work, school, or home), the rate was slightly higher, at about 45 percent. This kind of care was given to about 4 million teenagers in the United States in specialized mental health facilities. A social worker, psychologist, or counselor provided these services to about 3.5 million students at their school, underscoring the significance of educational institutions in the provision of mental health care for adolescents. 13-02-2024 page 1 GAC027 - 028 ESNI187143 Natalia Falasco This graph, which was previously published on NYTimes.com, illustrates the proportion of American teens, aged 13 to 17, who believe that a certain issue affects persons of their age in their town. Data from 920 youths who participated in a representative sample survey between September and November of 2018 is used. 4.0 Discussion The examination of study results highlights the intricate connection between adolescent mental health and more general worldwide issues including social exclusion, poverty, and inequality. Adolescent mental health is greatly impacted by the intersections of these complex concerns on a global scale. For instance, poverty increases adversity and stress levels for youth, which can lead to the emergence and aggravation of mental health problems. It also restricts their access to opportunities and services. Like this, unequal access to social support, healthcare, and education exacerbates these problems and widens the gaps in mental health outcomes between various communities. In addition, it is impossible to overestimate the impact of social media, digital technology, and globalization on adolescent mental health. Cultural norms and values have spread because of globalization, influencing teens' views of social acceptance, success, and beauty standards. While social media and digital technology offer new opportunities for self-expression and connection, they also bring 13-02-2024 page 1
