Fine black hair lay flat on this head, and fell over her forehead. The skin of her face seemed dull to me as the flap of our old canvas tent, and her cheeks puffed out the way the flap of that tent puffed in a wind. Her eyes were always squinting” (4) Visual imagery. The author uses this method so the reader can imagine what Verna’s appearance looks like. “I was awkward, precocious, timid, full of my private rituals and aversions” (5) Asyndeton. The author uses this to show what Marlene thinks about herself. ““She only wants to play. She doesn't know how to play.”” (6) Connection to the title, Child’s play. “What was the problem? Contamination, infection?” (7) Rhetorical question. Marlene is asking herself why she is avoiding Verna. She questions her behavior towards Verna’s presence. “I have not kept up with Charlene.” Sudden change of story. Doesn’t explain what happened after Verna approached her while swimming. “Charlene and I both lost our footing. We had our backs to the raft, because we were watching Verna come towards us” (18) Another change of timeline. The story goes back to talking about Verna after giving an insight into Marlene’s life as an adult. “Verna's head did not break the surface, though now she was not inert, but turning in a leisurely way, light as a jellyfish in the water. Charlene and I had our hands on her, on her rubber cap.” (19) A shocking and unexpected twist. Very unexpected because Marlene drowning Verna with Charlene happened suddenly. The whole business probably took no more than two minutes. Three? Rhetorical question that shows Marlene trying to remember the events and trying to guess how long it took for Verna to die.
