Archaeological Wonders of Calakmul: Urban Design, Water Systems, and Prominent Structures, Diapositivas de Historia

Calakmul, an ancient Mayan city, is renowned for its impressive architecture, including urban planning, reservoirs, and prominent structures. The city's core spans 2 sq km and contains around 1000 structures, while the outskirts house smaller residential buildings. Calakmul is surrounded by an extensive network of canals and reservoirs, with eight ancient roads connecting it to local suburban sites and distant allies and rivals. Notably, Structure 1 and Structure 2 showcase the advanced engineering and architectural skills of the Maya civilization. Structure 1, situated east of the plaza center, features stella erected by ruler Yuknoom Took' K'awiil in 731. Structure 2, the largest pyramid in the Maya world, was built in stages, with the core dating back to the late pre-classic period and an extension added in the early classic period.
