We Choose Friends Who Are Genetically Similar to Us Sociologists have long pointed out that we often favor people who look like us. Now, a new study shows that that bias runs deeper still: we tend to chose friends who are genetically similar to ourselves. Unexpectedly, the similarity can't just be explained away by friends who share the same ancestral heritage. Researchers from the University of California, San Diego, arrived at this finding after comparing genome-wide data from nearly 2,000 individuals with that of their unrelated, platonic friends and WRITING APPLICATION FORM Section 1: Personal details Instructions: Please complete section 1 in CAPITAL LETTERS Surname: Drija El Batouli First name: Lina Title (delete as appropriate): Mr / Mrs / Miss / Ms Address (incluiding postcode): C/ Jaume II number 11 2D (07400); Mallorca, Spain. DEBATE Lina: - Arguments for. The term natural disaster is defined as “a sudden and terrible event in nature that usually results in serious damage and many deaths.” How does climate change impact each of these extreme events? Climate change can influence various natural disasters, including floods, storms, earthquakes, extreme temperatures, landslides, droughts, wildfires, and volcanic activity. In addition to its serious impact on the environment and people, climate change presents a range of risks and impacts that are expected to negatively impact our economy. These include property loss and damage, infrastructure and service costs and risks to financial stability. For example, heatwaves reduce work capacity and productivity. Hurricanes and cyclones leave millions of people in poverty after razing and destroying all their homes. And droughts reduce harvests, making it increasingly difficult to feed a world population. Finally, the World Bank warns: if we don't take action urgently, the impacts of climate change could push 100 million more people into poverty in 2030. Last but not lead, Climate change threatens ecosystems, causing extinctions and migrations of species. Higher temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns alter natural habitats, such as ocean acidification, which damages marine ecosystems. As a consequence, the loss of biodiversity affects the stability and resistance of ecosystems. Changes in migration alter ecological balances, and the disappearance of ecosystems puts essential services and the lives Topic: Our controversial issue is going to be, are we supposed to take action in order to solve Climate change effects or are there other overwhelming issues ? Lina: ones we have mentioned before, since there are thousands of them and they remain unresolved. Marina: As I said before, there are other problems more important to resolve: wars, famine (femen), child exploitation… and all of them have serious consequences for the economy too. Wars destroy everything and famine already exists without climate change. Most of the pollution comes from rich countries but rich people build polluting factories in underdeveloped countries because in those areas the workforce is cheaper and so as raw materials. First of all, rich countries must stop exploiting poor countries. Poor countries can't even choose whether to help reduce climate change. This division that exists between rich and poor countries makes the undeveloped countries feel inferior and defenseless compared to the rich, in addition to more hunger, poverty, homeless people, children who cannot study... So, before resolving climate change, developed countries must help the underdeveloped. Lina: You’re only talking about humans, but what about all the species that are in danger of extinction and also have to migrate. Natural disasters alter natural habitats, such as ocean acidification, which damages marine ecosystems. As a consequence, the loss of biodiversity affects the stability and resistance of ecosystems. And the disappearance of ecosystems puts lifes humans being at risk. Carla: Mainly, the worse effects are a consequence of high temperatures that produce heat waves. These phenomenal make the heat stress which can suppose to the animal symptoms such as metabolic disorders, immunosuppression, or death. On the one hand, homeothermic animals knows when they have to do heat loss and reduce heat production, this process is it called hyperthermia. Moreover, if the degrees are fluctuating, there are going to produce heat stress on all these animals. On the second hand, immunosuppression cause a tendency to get infected by pathogenic organisms, because their immune system is malfunctioning. Thirdly, experts quarrel that in the hottest months of the years we register the higher amount of animal deaths. All the symptoms from this area are called heat-induced complication, and their appearance is produced when the Celsius grades raise 3 o 4 grade upper average temperature. Paula: We have already realized everything that influences climate change, but apart from developing a good plan there are other important factors that also influence. Marina: We agree with all the consequences on nature, ecosystems and the survival of the animals and human race. But the most important to stop climate change is that all countries must agree and work together, so first there must be dialogue between all the countries all over the world. For example, countries like China, which are among the most polluting countries, do not agree to help solve climate change and the USA is not collaborating either. Climate change is a global problem and everyone must fight together against it. For this reason, we must focus on getting all countries to agree to stop climate change and stop the division between the developed and undeveloped countries. If we don't, we will stay as we are and the earth will continue to rise in temperature. Carla (conclusion): With this in mind, climate change is an overpowering issue, so we must pay attention to it. Since it would be foolish to tackled with problems that will not exist in a couple of years, when the planet is no longer habitable. Despite off, we reckon, it is possible to take action into climate change and other concerns at the same time.
