Introducing Geometric Figures to Second Graders through ELT Methodology, Apuntes de Cultura Inglesa

An elt methodology for teaching geometric figures to second-grade students. The approach is based on an open, flexible, and active learning environment where students are encouraged to explore and learn through english. The objectives include introducing students to basic geometric figures in 2d and 3d, recognizing figures in real objects, and learning vocabulary related to geometric shapes. A sequence of activities, including introducing geometric shapes through a visual song, playing shapes bingo, creating a character with geometric figures, and making a shopping list of geometric figures.

Vocabulary: -Food in the supermarket. (all fruit, food or drinks that have geometric shapes that we are working). Example: I have one circle - I have an apple) Vocabulary: -Parts of the face. (eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, ears, mustache, etc). Grammar: - Verb TO HAVE Example: I have two circles in the eyes. - THERE IS /ARE Example: There is a circle in the eye. ASSESSMENT: MATERIALS AND RESOURCES  In the first session we will do an initial evaluation, through the interaction we will verify the previous knowledge of the students. In sessions 2.3 and 4 we will do a summative evaluation (continued, centered in the process) through a rubric, this will include the observation, realization of the activities and degree of participation and attention in the different sessions. Finally, we will carry out a final evaluation, where we can observe the retention of the contents previously explained through a routine of everyday life, such as going shopping in a supermarket. - A big computer -Computers for children - Domino’s game - Papers - Pencils - Scissors -Small box or pot   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    . -Photographs of geometrical shapes SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITIES T I Session 1: “Introduce the geometrical shapes” DIFFERENTATION:  30’ WC First of all, the teacher ask to their students if they know what geometrical figures are, if if they can point to objects that have that shape and if they know what they are called. Then, geometric figures are introduced through a visual song - “3D Shapes I Know” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cg-Uc556-Q - 3’) The song is repeated twice to try to repeat the name of the figures aloud all together. In this way they identify the name of the figures with the drawing. Finally, the teacher will introduce more figures of what is said in a more visual way. It will show pictures of the figures drawn and the children will have to say the name out loud as fast or slow as the teacher passes the pictures. - No adaptation required 10’ WC The class is divided into the same groups that are seated at the tables. The teacher says aloud a geometric form and the members of the group have to get up and go to touch objects of the class that have that shape. If the teacher sees that the children are very loud and excited, she can do that by groups of tables, they will have to write down the maximum number of objects in   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    Also, each time they touch an object they will have to say the name of the form again aloud. the class that have the figure that the teacher says at a certain time.  20’ SG They will have a small box in groups and inside there will be a domino. The students will have to divide the cards without seeing them and they will have to match the name with the picture of the geometric figure or a food that we can find in a supermarket. In this way, we introduce the relationship of the food with the names of the figures. If the children don’t remember the names of the figures, they can look at the cards of the geometrical figures that the teacher has worked minutes ago.  T I Session 2: “Shapes Bingo” DIFFERENTATION  20’ WC The teacher will put the song back twice so that the children can reframe the geometric figures again. In addition, the activity of teaching the photographs of all the figures that we work will be repeated, and they will have to say them aloud interspersed by groups, couples, the whole class, etc. - No adaptation required 10’ WC The teacher explains how to play "Shapes Bingo" and decide which groups will play. - No adaptation required  30’ SG In groups of four, the dominoes are distributed. One of them will be the one that raising a letter from a bundle that is down, will say that figure is the one that the other companions of his card have to eliminate. This will be done successively until one of the participants manages to eliminate all the figures from their role. For those students who find it difficult to learn the vocabulary, they will be helped with the cards that the teacher uses to   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    3. Variation: You could also do this activity where each child has the individual cards. Then, the teacher says a figure out loud and the students have to take the picture of that figure and raise it by hand. ❏ Activity 2: Description: The teacher explains how to play "Shapes Bingo" and decide which groups will play. Then, in groups of four, the dominoes are distributed. One of them will be the one that raising a letter from a bundle that is down, will say that figure is the one that the other companions of his card have to eliminate. This will be done successively until one of the participants manages to eliminate all the figures from their role. Material: - Chips for the game - Photographs of geometrical shapes (circle, oval, triangle, square, rectangle, sphere, cylinder, cube and rectangular prism). Organization: It can be done in a class where the students are sitting in chairs and leaning on the table, or they can do it in another place that is comfortable without noise as for example the room of relaxation on the sofas.   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    Observations: For those students who find it difficult to learn the vocabulary, they will be helped with the cards that the teacher uses to start the class and amplify the geometrical figures. Example: Session 3: “We create a character with geometric figures’’ Objectives: - To beef up the vocabulary of geometric figures, prepositions and parts of the face. - To know how to describe and understand what the activity asks you.   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    Content: vocabulary of geometrical shapes, prepositions and. Description: In the first part of the activity we will give the students sheets of paper. In them they must draw different geometric figures (circle, square, triangle ...) and cut them out. When the students already have the cut out figures we will ask them to put themselves in pairs. Each participant of the couple must create a character in a pot or box without his partner seeing it. When they have one, they will have to explain the character to the other so they can do it in another box and see if it matches. Partner S2 will describe his later. To finish the activity the teacher will explain the character that she has created and the students should represent it in their box. . Material: - Small box or pot. - Papers - Pencils - Scissors Organization: To carry out this activity the students will be grouped in pairs. The activity can be developed in the classroom or in any other space of the school, for example, plastic classroom. Observations: If the students show difficulty in explaining their character, the teacher will help them by writing different examples of sentences on the board.   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    Example of shopping list   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    Session 5: Buy geometry in the supermarket! Objectives: - Identify and differentiate 2D shapes and 3D shapes. - Relate correctly the geometric figures in the list to food of the supermarket. - Promoting teamwork - Show motivation and interest in the activity - Give good use to materials - Use the mathematical vocabulary learned in previous sessions Content: Vocabulary of geometrical shapes. Description: In the last activity, the teacher will recreate a supermarket in the classroom, in the students will play a game where they show everything they have learned in the previous sessions. To begin with, the students will be distributed in their groups and the teacher shall distribute to each group their list of the purchase, created in Activity 4. Children will have to complete the shopping list correctly in 5 minuts, they will add their food in the shopping cart. When the students are finished, the teacher will check that the food they have taken correspond to the figures they had on the list. Material:   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    - Food such as pizza, fizzy drinks, pieces of fruit… - Lists of the purchase - Elements of a supermarket as a cash register, shopping baskets... - A clock Organization: Students will be grouped into cooperative groups of 5, the same groups as in session 4. Observations: All the students of the group must participate equally, it is important that the group organizes well to find the figures of the list of the purchase in the established time. The teacher will be aware that all members of the group participate in the activity.   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    Vocabulary It uses perfectly the mathematical vocabulary learned. It uses correctly mathematical vocabulary worked. The mathematical vocabulary learned is limited. It uses very little the mathematical vocabulary worked. 6. Any other information If we see that at the beginning of the session there is a foreign child or any other child who knows the vocabulary and the concepts that we are going to deal with in these activities, the teacher will make this same person be the one to help the teacher and teach her classmates how to treat the new content with the help of the teacher. In this way, the learning that the students will have will be much closer and motivating since when a partner explains it, a series of strategies are developed that as a teacher you often do not know that for the class it will be much more useful. After some experience, always the children among them when explaining things understand it better than when a teacher explains it.   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    7. Conclusion Once we have finished our planning, we think in a general way that this work has given us a very different vision of teaching content in English. It has allowed us to think about expressive, significant, contextualized and playful activities to make the students learn new concepts with a more open and predisposed attitude. In this case, it can also be said that this type of methodology is complicated in our schools and that spaces, time and concepts are always very marked and delimited by the way of doing the school. Even so, we are sure that in our classes we fight to be able to implement this type of activities because we are convinced that it is the best way to learn. On the other hand, we must emphasize that, if we have the opportunity to work in a transversal way, we must take advantage of it. In our case, we decided to work on the English vocabulary and at the same time a concrete concept of mathematics, giving the students the opportunity to amplify their learning not only in the English language but in the field of mathematical logic. In addition, we consider it essential that students obtain meaningful learning, that is, that students consider useful the academic content they are going to learn and that they are able to retain these contents over time. For this reason in our sessions we seek to arouse the interest of the children, motivate them and actively involve them in the learning. We also connect the contents with aspects of real life so that students can find a sense of what they are learning.   Introduction to ELT Methodology 2018 - 2019    8.
