Multilingualism Project Family Language Policy by Kendall A. King English Applied Linguistics - G1 20393940 - ZONIA, Aqsa Please read King et al. (2008) “Family Language Policy” (see google drive folder) and answer the following questions. 1. What is the definition of family language policy and why is it relevant for heritage language learning? First of all, it is important to say that family language policy is defined as explicit and overt planning in relation to language use within the home among family members. Apart from this, family language policy is an important area of investigation as it sets the frame for child—caretaker interactions, and, ultimately, child language development, while also providing a window into parental language ideologies, thus reflecting broader societal attitudes and ideologies about both language(s) and parenting. Family language policy draws from — and contributes to — two distinct fields of study: language policy and child language acquisition. On the other hand, family language policy approaches deepen our under- standing of home language maintenance processes as well as how heritage language learners are best supported. 2. Name three types of parental ideologies or attitudes that have an impact on linguistic practices in bilingual families. 1. The principal type of parental attitude would be when parents often have clear ideas about which languages should be used for what purposes with their children, in other words, fathers and mothers really know which languages they want to speak and the purpose of speaking or using that language. 2. The second kind of parental ideologie should be when parents” attitudes concerning particular types of interactions, such as mixing or use of slang, impact their own child-directed speech. 3. The last type of parental ideologie should be parents” attitudes towards language leaming and bilingualism also come into play in influencing their interactional strategies.
