John Milton 1667: date of publication John Milton and Andrew Marvell Milton was born in London.Mastered greek, latin, hebrew and european languages. He defended Cronwell and wrote pamphlets justificating the execution of Charles I. Some compositions of Milton: Comus (1634) Paradise Lost: (1667) (against of the period of restoration). 1671 (Paradise regained) He was a puritan, not a royalist. Eventhough he published in the period of restoration, he was against the restoration. Milton decided against another Spenserian national epic on Arthurian litterature which was originally his intention) and committed himself to be a biblical epic instead. Already blind he dictated to his daughter an epic of the Fall and on Satan the Fallen Angel.Told in media res in 10 original books, later (1674) amounted to 12. Written in blank verse: lines of iambic pentameter with no rhyme. The first two books are set in Hell. It creates the epic simile. Satan´s palace in Hell as striking on instance of the sublime in poetry, as the garden of Eden is of the beautiful. In book 3 Adam is created and Satan flies around the earth. Eden is described and satan is discovered in Eden in Book 4. Eve tells of her dreams in book 5 and the story of battle in Heaven starts. It continuous in books 6-8. The story of the Fall of Man is told in book 9and the subsequent punishment inflicted upon the devils in book 10. In the second edition (1674), Books 11-12 round off the story with a visión of history beyond the flood to the second coming of Christ.
