Atmospheric pollutants Urban pollutants Rainwater is the water that flows into storm drain, this water is not treated and filtered for pollutants. This contaminated water flows into canals, into streams and lakes, and then ends up in the ocean. Everything other than pure rain water is a potential contaminant that degrades water quality. The water usually flows from rooftops, over paved areas, bare soil, and sloped lawns. As it flows, stormwater runoff collects and transports pollutants, urban and atmospheric, urban pollutants can be animal waste, litter, salt, pesticides, fertilizers, oil & grease, soil and as atmospheric it can be sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide that produce acid rain, that later will fall and join to the storm drainage systems polluting the streams, lakes, rivers, etc. Most streams, lakes and coastal waters surrounding large cities are too polluted for people to use.
