You have to consider the characters’ circumstances and attitudes throughout the novel and justify your proposal.   The story from my point of view would not change so much. At that moment  immigrants were treated with indifference and were considered a lower class. I mean,  if Angela’s parents were legal, the history would not change so much in some aspects.  This is due to the fact that in the British of the 1960 the colour of the skin makes the  different between one person and another. No matter if you have been born in  England, what matters mainly is the colour of your skin.  I say this because in the book when Angela is in  catechesis, one of her classmates is  laughing at her partner for having dark skin. Furthermore,  although Angela does not  have such dark skin, she also receives an insult from this partner.  In this scene, we can see the difficulties that Jamaican family (in this case) have faced  in the past. How racial differences have marked the life of this family.   Furthermore, it is the difference in how children, (specially Angela), sees British  society.  I mean, when Mr. Jacob is ill Angela asks her father if she can look for doctors because  she knows better the society. Angela feels part of the British society, and she wants to  find her place.   Conversely, her father has always in mind his past, he does not want anyone to know  his name. Her father’s name is Jacob, but he is ashamed because people can know that he is an immigrant due to his name.    Moreover, there is a thing which is important that from my point of view would have  changed part of the story. It is the relationship between the  six members of the  family.  Angela, the main protagonist, does not know that her father has a brother. This  brother is also living in England. Angela does know his existence until the end of the  novel, when her father is about to die. Thus, her father never speaks about his past  life, about his life in Jamaica. For him, it is as if he had always lived in London.  From what I know, and I have read about her father’s personality I would say that he  never talks about his mistakes or his past life because he is ashamed about it.  Mr.  Jacobs considers himself a person who does not make mistakes.  I base my opinion on the fact that at the end of the novel, Mr. Jacobs believes that his  only mistake was dying of lung cancer.  This attitude of the father causes a distancing in the family relationship.  His kids do  not know exactly his work, and they do not feel confident enough to ask him.    There is a thing which has drawn my attention. It is the fact that at the end of the novel when Angela’s father is about to die Angela wants to kiss him, but she is not able, she  does not feel confident. This shown how cold the relationship was.
