The characters • Main Characters • Second Characters Albert Camus ᴥ The Stranger 2 BOOK REPORT His literary work begins linked to existentialism, as can be seen in El extranjero (1942), whose background, like many of his works, is located in his native Algeria. Little by little, Camus moved away from both Marxism and existentialism and adopted positions in what would be called the Philosophy of the Absurd, which led him to maintain a bitter controversy with Jean Paul Sartre. Albert Camus received the highest award for literature, the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1957, just three years before he died in a road accident in 1960. He was 46 years old. The geographic location and the time This book was written in France in 1942, at the time of the Second World War. In this same place and time, the facts of the novel take place. The time inside the book is approximately six months It takes place in a real space, since Algiers, the city where Meursault lived, can be located geographically. Also in internal spaces such as the Restaurant of Celeste, the Office of the director of the asylum, the room of Meursault, the court or the cell. But also in external spaces such as the courtyard of the asylum, the beach, the field on the way to the cemetery and the cemetery. Albert Camus ᴥ The Stranger 5 BOOK REPORT DIVISION The structure of the book is divided into two parts which are divided into many chapters: - Part I: divided into IV chapters - Part II: divided into V chapters. The characters Main character • Meursault - The protagonist and narrator of The Foreigner, to whom the title of the novel refers. Meursault is a detached figure who sees and describes much of what happens around him from a removed position. He is emotionally indifferent to others, including his mother and his lover, Marie. He also refuses to adhere to the accepted moral order of society. After Meursault kills a man, the Arab, for no apparent reason, is brought to trial. However, the focus of Meursault's murder trial quickly shifts from murder to Meursault's attitudes and beliefs. Meursault's atheism and his lack of external pain at his mother's funeral represent a serious challenge to the morals of the society in which he lives. Consequently, society qualifies him as a stranger. Albert Camus ᴥ The Stranger 6 BOOK REPORT Second characters • Marie Cardona - A former Meursault co-worker who begins an adventure with him the day after his mother's funeral. Marie is young and cheerful, and delights in swimming and the outdoors. Meursault's interest in Marie seems to be mainly the result of her physical beauty. Marie does not seem to understand it; however, she is attracted by his peculiarities. Even when Meursault expresses indifference, she still wants to be his wife, and she tries to support him during his arrest and trial. • Raymond Sintes - A local pimp and Meursault neighbor. Raymond gets angry when he suspects his lover is cheating on him, and in his plan to punish her, he recruits Meursault's help. Raymond seems to be using Meursault, whom he can easily convince to help him in his plans. However, Raymond trying to help Meursault with his testimony during the trial shows that Raymond has a certain capacity for loyalty. • Masson - One of Raymond's friends, who invites everyone to spend a Sunday at his home on the coast with him and his wife. It is during this fateful journey to the Masson coast house that Meursault kills the Arab. Masson is a vigorous figure, apparently content, and testifies to Meursault's good character during Meursault's trial. • Salamano - One of the neighbors of Meursault. Salamano owns an old dog that suffers from scabies, and mistreats. However, after Salamano loses his dog, he cries and longs for his return. His strong pain for losing his dog contrasts with Meursault's indifference for losing his mother. • The Arab - The brother of Raymond's lover. The Sunday that Raymond, Meursault and Marie spend at Masson's beach house, Meursault kills the Arab with Raymond's gun. The crime apparently has no motive: the Arab has done Albert Camus ᴥ The Stranger 7 BOOK REPORT For Meursault, the death sentence rejoices him and makes him understand the tender difference of the world and wish that on the day of his execution there are many spectators and that they receive his death with cries of hatred, also at that moment is the maximum splendor of the attitude of Meursault making everyone see him as a complete stranger representing total attribute to the name of the work. COMMENT According to the narrative and structure, in this book, are three important aspects that I wish to highlight. First of all, the narration is quite natural and light, it’s very easy to understand the point of view of the author with respect to the attitude of the protagonist, secondly I find interesting the characterization of the characters and the environment, from the beginning it gives a detailed description of the antagonists making the situation easier to understand. As for its structure, certainly the story begins in a sharp way with a controversial fact, however, the events that take place are coherent and somehow intertwine with each of Meursault’s actions. The protagonist, will speak clearly of his emotions and thoughts, although it’s evident his misunderstanding of reality, also denoting a certain air of confusion, for some reason I think that he decides to alienate himself from the events that surround his life, with such not to suffer a greater impact; I understand the criticism that Camus wants to make about the man who is forming at a social level, one lacking in values and sensitivity, for 1942 it was an idea that was still being generated, but for the current decade, we can see that despite that there is greater activism on the part of some groups toward raising awareness and respect for human rights, there are also segments of the population that still have behaviors related to the attitude of this protagonist, showing themselves completely uninvolved towards human suffering, death or the violence. Albert Camus ᴥ The Stranger 10 BOOK REPORT It’s a simple story as the protagonist said, however it has an interesting existentialist background, this doesn’t find a meaning to his life until he loses his freedom and the right to choose how to spend his days, somehow death is the calming needed to find out why he felt so indifferent to his current life. It’s a book full of content, which may be a bit monotonous at first, but I think it’s nice once you have the willingness to understand Camus’s motives for writing this work. BIBLIOGRAPHY • PONS, M.
