What alternatives are there to the use of plastic? According to an article published by ''Open Mind BBVA'' The first step in the attempt to reduce the use of plastic is to produce biodegradable polymers through the use of additives. However, this does not manage to solve the problem in its entirety, since it would always imply the use of a non-renewable source. Therefore, the next step is to obtain substitute materials that do not depend on Petroleum. One proposal offered by the ‘‘Universidad Pontifica Bolivariana’’ is for example, it is now possible to change traditional straws for those made of bamboo, silicone, steel or paper; choose cloth bags to go to the market, use bamboo cutlery instead of disposable ones, buy wooden toothbrushes, change resalable bags for reusable silicone ones, plastic cokes for glass ones, buy food such as fruits and unwrapped vegetables and try not to buy bottled water. Why do we need alternatives to plastic? While plastic is very durable and strong, it does not break down and degrade at all. Even if it does (after about 600-800 years), it still remains in our environment in the form of micro plastics. They are basically smaller bits of plastic that seep into our soil and water, causing a lot of harm to human health, animal health, and also plant health. it is difficult to find a plastic that does not have a negative impact on the planet. These alternatives will help control our use of plastic and will also create a ripple effect in the production chain. Today more than ever, we have so many different plastic alternatives. All we need is the right information and education to spread these alternatives so that they can be made available to more and more people around the world.
