THE ENEMY THE AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Desmond Bagley was born in Kendal, Cumbria on October 29, 1923. He left school when he was 13 years old. After that he worked as a printer’s assistant, factory worker, and during the Second World War is the aircraft industry. Bagley left England in 1947 for Africa and worked his way overland, crossing the Sahara Desert and briefly settling in Kampala, Uganda. By 1951, he has settled in South Africa, working in the gold mining before becoming a freelance writer for local newspapers and magazines. While he was there, he met a local bookstore director, Joan Margaret Brown, whom he married in 1960. Bagley and his wife left South Africa for England in 1964, where they lived in Devon until the year 1983, when Bagley died on 12 April. ABOUT HIS WRITINGS Bagley was an English journalist and novelist principally known for a series of bestselling thrillers. He set the basic conventions for the genre: a tough, resourceful, but essentially ordinary hero pitted against villains determined to sow destruction and chaos to advance their agenda. Bagley's first published short story appeared in the English magazine Argosy in 1957, and his first novel, The Golden Keel, in 1963. Between whiles he was a film critic for The Rand Daily Mail in Johannesburg from 1958 to 1962. The success of The Golden Keel had led Bagley to turn to full-time novel writing by the mid-1960s. He produced a total of 16 thrillers, all craftsman-like and almost all bestsellers. He published THE ENEMY in 1977. And a movie based on this book was filmed in 2001, also called The Enemy. THE BOOK 1. AN INTERESTING WOMAN. This first chapter of the book is made to present the main characters of the story. Penelope Ashton, George Ashton, Gillian Ashton and Benson. Malcom Jaggard is the one who tells the story about the mysterious things that happen to this family. In this chapter he talks about the first time he met Penny Ashton, the first time he went to Ashton’s House and his thoughts about the members of the family. 2. ACID IN THE EYES. This is where the story begins. They are in a normal day in Ashton’s house when suddenly Gillian, the little sister, comes from the church crying and covering her face, someone threw acid in her eyes. Then Malcom calls the ambulance and the police to report a criminal attack. George and Penny go with Gillian to the hospital while Malcom stays in the house and meets Detective Inspector Honnister, who is in charge of Gillian’s case. Malcom shows him his special identity card and they start to collaborate to identify who and why did that to Gillian. Then something weird happened. When George and Penny came back from the hospital, George asked Malcom to stay to talk with him for a while and asked him some weird questions. For example, he insisted so much on Malcom marrying her daughter and going to Australia in that moment. Malcom said no and got mad because his proposal on a moment like that, when his younger daughter just got hurt. That proposal woke up some interest from Malcom about George Ashton. 3. THE MYSTERIOUS GEORGE ASHTON. Malcom realized he didn’t know anything about his future father-in-law and after the weird questions he made him the night before he thought he needed to investigate a little bit about George, so decided to go to Nellie. Nellie was a computer in his office that had an enormous amount of information in her memory. Malcom searched Ashton and he found that all information about him was saved in Level Purple. And there’s when he realized there was important and secret information about him, because he couldn’t access to the information Nellie was saving. Then his bosses called him to ask why he tried to find information about Ashton, which made him think that George secret was even bigger. One of the bosses who calls him is Cregar, who Malcom doesn’t trust. Then they asked him to watch and protect Ashton’s family but didn’t tell him why and what was happening with this family. It was too secret for him to know. 4. FAMILY PROBLEMS. In this chapter Malcom shares information about the case with Inspector Honnister, but they still don’t have anything. They need to talk to Gillian and her father. So later, in the hospital, after knowing Gillian is blind, Penny tries to talk to her sister about the moment she was attacked. All she remembered was that the one who attacked her was a man and that he was about forty with pale skin. So, with that new information Honnister kept going with the acid case. Later, without knowing why, Malcom decided to ask Penny to marry him, she didn’t know what to say. Because a moment like that is not the best one to make a proposal, but she didn’t deny it. She said she would love to marry him but not right now, she needed all this thing away. 5. ASHTON DISAPPEARS. Malcom gives a list to his boss with everything he needs to protect all members of Ashton’s Family. Inspector Honnister also makes some progresses about the case. A witness who was walking near the church saw a dark blue Ford Cortina parked near Ahston’s house on Saturday afternoon. After that, when Malcom came back home, he found out that George and Benson had disappeared and left cards for Penny and Malcom. In Malcom’s card George said that he should marry Penny and asked him to be a bad son-in-law, which Malcom didn’t understand. 6. A BAD SON-IN-LAW? This is where Penny finds out about the real job of Malcom and he tells her everything he knows about her father and Benson. Penny also shares with Malcom some information that it could be helpful, and they read the card George left to Penny. When Penny already knew everything, they asked her permission to take a look at the house, she agreed, and all Malcom’s team started searching around every place in the house. The found a lot of things, like a model railway so big and with a complicated system, a small secret strong room, a very well-equipped laboratory… a lot of things but not a one helpful to investigate where was George. 7. ASHTON AND THE RUSSIAN SCIENTIST. An hour later, Malcom went to Ogilvie office, his boss, to tell him what they have found in his house. But he went with
