ROMEO AND JULIET SUMMARIES FROM BURLINGTON BOOKS Act 1: RIVALS AND LIFELONG ENEMIES Scene 1: A Public Place - In the 16th century, there are two rich and powerful families who are enemies (they would fight each other even in the streets), the Montagues (blue) and the Capulets (red). - One day, two Lord Capulet’s servant started a fight against two Montagues men; as they fight, Benvolio tried to stop the fight, but Tybalt attacked him. After that, many of both families started to fill the plaza (including Montague and Capulet, as well as their wives). The Prince and his soldiers stopped the fight, and warn them that if they fight again, they will pay with their life. - Montague asks Benvolio who started the fight (he doesn’t know because when he got there, they were already fighting). They talk about how Romeo is lately very melancholy and doesn’t speak with anybody. - Romeo walks into the plaza, and Benvolio tells Romeo’s parents that he’ll discover the matter with him. Romeo confesses that he is in love with Rosaline, who doesn’t love him back. Benvolio suggests that he must then forget her. But he denies his suggestion. Scene 2: A street in Verona - An hour later of the fight, Capulet and Count Paris are talking, Paris request marring Juliet (Lord Capulet’s daughter). Capulet is not really happy about the idea because he thinks that Juliet is way too young for marriage, but that if the Count convinces Juliet in the masked ball, he’ll agree to the wedding. - Capulet tells the servant, who was with them, to talk with the guests in the list. He doesn’t know how to read, so he asks two young men at the end of the street (who happened to be Benvolio and Romeo) if they can help him. - Romeo reads the list; he finds out about the masked ball, and that Rosaline will be there. Romeo asks if it is a party, and the servant says that it is, at the Lord Capulet’s house, and that they are invited if they are not from the Montague family. - Benvolio decides to go to the party (even thought he is a Montague; because it’s a masked ball, no one will recognize them), so that he can prove Romeo that there are many greater women than Rosaline. - Later that evening, Benvolio, Romeo and Mercutio are going to the masked ball, but Romeo all of a sudden doesn’t want to go. Mercutio convinces him to go, because they will be good music, food, wine and many lovely women. Scene 3: In Juliet’s Room - Just before the party begins, Lady Capulet asks Juliet if he wants to get marry, but Juliet doesn’t want to; she thinks she’s too young for that. That she doesn’t want to marry a man she does not know. - Lady Capulet says to observe Count Paris, because he has asks for her hand, and he is a very important man, and that would be an excellent husband for her. - The previous servant entered the room to announce that the guests were arriving; Lady Capulet just left without saying a word to Juliet Act 2: ROMEO MEETS JULIET Scene 1: At the Masked Ball - Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio entered to Lord Capulet’s house without any questions because the guards didn’t recognize them with the masks. - Once inside, Mercutio and Benvolio began to dance, but Romeo stayed on one side of the hall, observing people; that’s when he saw a beautiful young girl, he fell in love immediately. He started to say things like “She’s the most beautiful women in the world”, and because of that Tybalt, who was standing near him, identified Romeo’s voice. - Tybalt took out his small knife and started to walk toward Romeo, but when he saw Lord Capulet, he stopped. Tybalt told him the matter with Romeo, but Lord Capulet didn’t really care: he said that Romeo’s presence was accepted. Tybalt felt humiliated, so he decided to challenge Romeo to a duel. Romeo didn’t realize of this, because he was still blind to everybody else, unless the young girl. - Romeo approached her and put his hands on hers, they look at each other and that’s when Romeo kissed her. - Just then, the nurse appeared to tell Juliet to go talk with her mother immediately. When Juliet left, Romeo asked the Nurse who she was, and when he heard that she was a Capulet, he knew that he couldn’t love him. When the Nurse arrived to the room where Juliet was, Juliet asked her who he was; she also felt devastated when she was told that he was a Montague. Scene 2: In Lord Capulet’s Garden - After the party, Romeo went to the Lord Capulet’s garden to see Juliet one last time before going home. As he approached the house, Juliet came out of the bedroom, so Romeo hide behind a tree. - Juliet started to speak to the stars; she talked about how much he loves Romeo, and that only his name is the enemy, and that if he rejected it for her, she won’t be a Capulet for him any more. That's when Romeo appears, telling that he would reject his name for her love. - Suddenly, Juliet heard the Nurse looking for her. Juliet tells Romeo to leave, but that if he really intends to marry her, that she’ll send her Nurse the next day to tell her the time and place of their wedding. - They say goodbye to each other, and Romeo thinks of asking Friar Laurene for help. Scene 3: In Friar Laurence’s cell - Next day, Romeo reach for Friar Laurence’s cell. Romeo asks Friar Laurence to marry Juliet and him. - The father is surprise by this because Romeo previously only loved Rosaline just yesterday. But now, Romeo is convinced that he only love Juliet. - After a lot of thinking, the friar agrees to marry them; he even thinks it’s a good idea, because maybe, thanks to this marriage, the rivalry between the families will end. Act 3: A MARRIAGE AND TWO MURDERS Scene 1: In a Tavern - Benvolio and Mercutio met in a tavern the next morning, They talk about, how Tybalt challenged Romeo to a duel in that morning. After that, Romeo appears in the same tavern, and apologies for leaving early last night. - Later on, The nurse entered the tavern and asks Romeo to speak in private. She told him that Juliet sent her as a messenger to asks him for news. - Romeo told the nurse that she has to tell Juliet to find a reason to leave her house that same afternoon to go to Friar Laurence’s cell, where Romeo will be waiting for her. So that later, they can go to the church and then Friar Laurence will marry them. After that, Romeo’s servant will meet the Nurse, he’ll give her a robe, so that Romeo can enter to Juliet’s room at that same night Scene 2: In Juliet’s Room - Juliet is waiting in her room for the nurse to come to tell her what Romeo had said, at first he makes her wait to make it more intriguing, but then tells her that Romeo will be waiting for her in Laurence’s cell to get married. Scene 3: In Friar Laurence’s cell - Romeo was waiting for Juliet in Laurence’s cell, nervous. Laurence sees that Romeo is very impatient and nervous. He asked Romeo if there would be sadness in this marriage, and he replied that he only feels happiness when he is with her. - Then, Juliet appeared, the two were very happy. The father interrupted the reunion to tell them that it is time to go to church to get married.
