THE CLIENT ISABELLA DELA POLA 1BACH D1 CHAPTER 1 (MARK AND RICKY) The first chapter talks about an eleven boy called Mark and his little brother Ricky. Mark has taken care of his brother since he was a child and also started smoking when he was 9 years old, the reason why Ricky threatened him to tell their mother unless he showed him how to smoke. Mark accepted. Once they were in the woods where Mark was going to show him, a car appeared. There was a bald, drunk man inside. He was going to commit suicide, and Mark decided to try to save him twice, the second time the man saw him and forced him to get into the car where he was going to fill up with gas until he died. Ricky, scared, knew that he had to save his older brother. VOCABULARY: 1. Hose: a flexible tube conveying water (manguera). 2. Rear-view mirror: a mall angled mirror fixed inside the windscreen of a motor vehicle. (espejo retrovisor). 3. Tail pipe: an outlet by which engine exhaust gases are expelled from a vehicle (tubo de escape). CHAPTER 2 (THE MAN IN THE CAR) In the second chapter Mark tried to escape but he couldn’t open the door. The drunk man told Mark that they were going to die together, after that the man hit him and held a gun in front of his face, but he didn’t shoot him. Mark was scared, and while the man kept drinking he tried to ask him questions, he found out who he was and why he was trying to kill himself. Meanwhile, Ricky pulled out the hose. After a while, Jerome, who was the man, fell asleep *ybecause of the alcohol. Mark ran out, and moments later the man, after seeing the hose on the floor, he went back in the car and killed himself VOCABULARY: 1. Implored: beg someone earnestly or desperately to do something. (implorar) 2. Bullet: a metal projectile for firing from a rifle, revolver, or other small firearm, typically cylindrical and pointed, and sometimes containing an explosive. (bala) CHAPTER 3 (AT HOME) In this chapter after Jeroma killed himself, Ricky ran home, Mark followed him. When they got home Ricky sat on the sofa and he started making strange noises. Mark didn't know what to do and decided to call 911, he said there was a dead body and he didn’t say his name, after that he put down his phone. He decided to go back to the woods, he saw cops around the car. One of them saw Mark and started asking him some questions, Mark didn’t say the truth completely. The cop drove Mark home. When they got there Ricky continued on the sofa, it seemed like he got so scared that he was in shock, moments later Dianne, Mark's mom called the ambulance. Finally Dianne and Ricky got to the hospital by ambulance while the cop drove Mark. VOCABULARY: 1. Broke away: to get away from (someone or something) especially by using force. (se separó) 2. CHAPTER 4 (ROY FOLTRIGG) In this chapter Roy Foltrigg , the district attorney in New Orleans , received a call telling him that Jerome Clifford had died. Foltrigg was with Thomas Fink. Muldano had found another lawyer and the trial had been postponed because the murdered senator's body had not been found. After that, Trumann came in. The three men agreed to travel to Memphis that afternoon to study Clifford's suicide. Fink and Foltrigg thought that Clifford knew where Senator Boyette's body was buried, and Fink said that he had met Clifford, and that after that, he didn't know anything about him until one night he called him drunk and told him that he did not want to defend Muldano. The next day he called him to tell him to forget anything he had said about where the Senator's body was buried, but Clifford had not mentioned anything about it that made Fink ask him about it and insinuated that he knew where the body was. Fink thought that Clifford might have committed suicide because he told someone where the body was, and if Muldano found out he would have killed him. said: He was scared and drinking and he needed to talk about someone, he also said something about wanting to make a deal with us, of course, that didn't happen. It could be a possibility that he talked about the body to the boy. I'll be honest, I need the senator's body to blame Mundano. If the boy knows something, I need to know it. Reggie told them that they would meet there tomorrow morning again. She didn’t confirm if Mark would be there. Once they left, Foltrigg said to Trumann to find out if they could put Mark and his family into the Witness Protection Program. Meanwhile in the hospital Mark told the complete story to Greenway and Dianne, but still didn’t mention where the body was buried. VOCABULARY: 1. (trato) CHAPTER 10 (INTIMIDATION) In this chapter Muldanno found out about Mark after all the calls and people Foltrigg spoke to. Muldanno visited a friend, Paul Gronke, he explained the situation and told him to convince the kid to be quiet. Hours later Mark decided to go to the cafeteria, on his way back to the room, Gronke followed him into the elevator and pushed him into a corner, he told him that if he didn’t stay quiet he would kill him and all his family. Moments later Mark was frightened and decided to tell Reggie about it, after that Reggie asked the hospital to put security guards near Ricky’s room to protect him and his family. After looking for Gronke they didn’t find him. VOCABULARY: 1. Angered: fill (someone) with anger; provoke anger in. (enfureció) 2. Desperately: in a way that shows despair. (desesperadamente) CHAPTER 11 (THE MOTIVE FOR MURDER) In this chapter Mark and Clint spoke for a while and moments later he fell asleep. Clint and Reggie started to read lots of files about the case, and they go to the conclusion that if Muldanno had sent someone to scare Mark It’s because he was hiding something, like the senator's body. VOCABULARY: 1. Bribed: dishonestly persuade (someone) to act in one's favour by a gift of money or other inducement. (sobornó) 2. On bail: the temporary release of an accused person awaiting trial, sometimes on condition that a sum of money is lodged to guarantee their appearance in court. (Bajo fianza) CHAPTER 12 (AN EXPLOSION) In this chapter Reggia and Mark on their way to Ricky’s room had to pass through lot’s of reporters asking questions. Reggie told Mark to not answer or look at them. Once they got to Ricky’s room there were two guards, they let them in and Ricky was sleeping, a few hours later Ricky woke up and they started to ask him some questions, Mark told him that he already had told her mum, Ricky got scared remembering what happened and he fell asleep crying. Meanwhile Gronke put a box against the door of the trailer, and moments later it blew open and sat it on fire. VOCABULARY: 1. Surrounded: be all round (someone or something). 2. Meant to blow open: In an athletic competition, the expression "blow it open" means to outperform the opposition to the extent that the contest's outcome is no longer in doubt. (para que, con el fin de que) CHAPTER 13 (IN CUSTODY) In this chapter Foltrigg, Fink and Trumann were having breakfast and talking about Mark, they said that he was obstructing justice and moments later Foltrigg received a call where they told him about the trailer. They decided to try to convince the judge that Mark should be in protective custody. They spoke to the judge and explained everything. Hours later a cop arrived at Ricky's room, while Dianne was crying because of the trailer, the cop said that he needed Mark to go with him to the Juvenile Detention Centre, where he would be safe. Before he left, a reporter saw what was happening and asked Mark, he thought it was so unfair that he would say it to the reporter for everyone to know, but he didn’t know that Gronke would see that and immediately call Muldano and tell him everything. (me preocupa) CHAPTER 14 (IN DETENTION) In this chapter Dianne told Reggie that Mark had left for the Juvenile Detention Centre. She decided to go, once there she spoke with the judge who was his friend. After that she went back with Mark and explained to him that they were going to go to court in a few minutes, and that the judge wouldn’t force him to talk, but he could send him back to detention. VOCABULARY: 1. Courtroom: the place or room in which a court of law meets. (sala de justicia) 2. Threatened: state one's intention to take hostile action against someone in retribution for something done or not done. (amenazado) CHAPTER 15 (IN COURT) In this chapter the Judge asked Trumann, Fink and Foltrigg how did they intend to protect Mark from from the Mafia if he gives them the information, they told him that his family would enter a Federal Witness Protection Programme, the judge liked the idea and spoke to Reggie, she also thought it was a good idea. Reggia and the judge had a plan, Mark would say anything and they would keep him in detention a little longer, after they knew everything they would give new names to the family, a new house, new school, all the money they needed until they found a new job for Dianne. Moments later the court went like planned. VOCABULARY: 1. Bailiff: a sheriff's officer who executes writs and processes and carries out distraints and arrests. (aguacil) 2. (incrédulo) CHAPTER 16 (DANGER FOR REGGIE) In this chapter Mark thought about his situation for a long time and decided that he was going to escape, meanwhile Reggie spoke to Dianne about the Programme, Dianne wasn’t sure but she started to think that maybe that’s her only solution. The FBI agent followed Muldanno into a small restaurant were they spoke to a man that worked there, they told them a little bit about the situation and asked him to put a salt shaker that had a bug inside that made them hear everything, Sam, the worker, scared accepted. The FBI started to hear all the conversation, Muldanno was planning on killing Reggie instead of Mark because he was in detention, It would be hard to kill him. After getting
