Ch.1 1. “The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness.” How does Lily’s home show signs of queenlessness? Discuss how this magnifies issues that are considered normal for girls of Lily’s age and what additional issues this creates. Lily's home shows signs of queenlessness by demonstrating how much the household needs Lily's mother to guide her. Lily doesn't have a mother figure and can't relate to other girls by lack of femininity in her household. She sees Rosaleen as a mother but can’t relate to other girls her age because she doesn't dress the same as them. T.Ray has always treated Lily the same way but when her mother was alive, she was there to protect her and defend her against T.Ray. 2.Identify the use of foreshadowing in this chapter and discuss its purpose The use of foreshadowing in this chapter is that the jar of bees shows that Lily is searching for freedom. When she opens the jar it foreshadows that she is going to be free and run away from home and T.Ray. Ch. 2 1. Use evidence from the book to discuss whether or not T. Ray is a racist. Can there be degrees of racism and, if so, is it OK? T.Rays ia racist, he tells Lily that Rosaleen shouldn’t have provoked the three white men since they were known to be hatred of african american people. He says that he wouldn’t have been surprised if she got killed but doesn’t say anything about the topic afterwards. He also doesn’t get Rosaleen out of jail because she caused trouble and he was wondering what she was thinking. There are not degrees of racism, if someone is racist, they are racist no matter who they are. it's not okay to be racist because everyone if the same and someone's skin color doesn't define them. 2. What is the meaning of the metaphor of the jar: “Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open”? The jar represents her home where she lives with T.Ray and the metaphor means that Lily is able to run away from home and feel freedom from the abuse that she receives. Lily can finally know more about her mother by going to Tiburon. 3. Why is Lily angry with Rosaleen? Do you think that she is justified in her feelings? She is angry because Rosaleen almost got killed by three white men. I think her feelings were justified because she was worried about Rosaleen getting killed and hurt by not staying silent.
