Shakespeare as a dramatist :                     By Daniela Carolina Arteaga Armas. Primer Curso de  Estudios Ingleses (PA101).   Go to the following web pages (or any others you might know dealing with Shakespeare's drama) and search for some key quotations by Shakespeare. Relate them to the play they belong to and comment on the passages you have chosen as descriptive of the speaker's situation in the play or of the main theme in the play. You can pick up as many quotations from the same play as you like in order to better understand the nature of the play or of its characters. Romeo and Juliet: Act 2, scene 2: 1. How does it affect the content of the speeches? The night plays a very important role in the scene. This is a forbidden romance, therefore it has to hide in the darkness of the night.Juliet also represents the light that shines or leaves the heart of Romeo in gloom. In fact, if she rejected him, he would prefer to die. 2. What are the comparisons or metaphors in this scene? First, the first metaphor for Juliet's beauty describes a life giving power that eclipses the lesser beauty of the "envious moon,". Romeo says he wears "night's cloak," and Juliet says "the mask of night" is on her face. Romeo and Juliet's love is both a benefit to them and a destructive force. On the other hand, at the end of the scene, it both describes their ties and compares Romeo to "a poor prisoner”. Her words foreshadow perfectly the events to come later in the play. 3. Point out the vocabulary related to the semantic field of nature and the senses. As for the vocabulary, we can find “the light” , “the sun “, “the moon”, “envious”, “sick” “pale”, “bold” , “stars “ and more, whose describe the atmosphere and the context of the situation. 4. How would you describe the relationship between Romeo and Juliet at this point: What is happening ? Do we get a sense of tragedy or of joy in this scene? Explain where and why. It's a love affair but at the same time self-destructive. Juliet was a Capulet and Romeo a Montague, so both families were confronted and their relationship was an impossible love. I think in this scene
