Write a brief summary of the short story you have chosen to work on. The main character in this story is a young man, named Billy Mayer, who had travelled from London to Bath to join in a business office. He was recommended by a porter in the train station to lodge in The Bell and Dragon, the nearest and cheapest hotel. While walking to the hotel something uncanny happens to him: he sees a printed notice in a window saying Bed and breakfast and he cannot walk away from the building and ends ringing the bell. The door was opened immediately and he found a smiling middle-aged woman. She treated him with sweetness and gentleness and said that the hotel was empty, neat and the price was less than half of what he had been willing to pay. The woman takes Billy up to his room, actually to his floor the second one, and then offers him anything for dinner, which Billy refuses. According as they talks she looks dotty: she can’t remember his surname and everything is confused but he guessed that she probably lost a son or something like and she was still affected. The landlady then adds that they must go downstairs to sign the guestbook because she said that in the hotel law is respected. He agreed and after get settled in the bedroom, wash his hands and tidy himself up finally he headed down to living room to sign the guestbook. When he entered the living room nobody was there except for the little dog sleeping in front of the hearth. He found the guestbook and signed it, noticing there were only two entries before his: Christopher Mulholland and Gregory Temple, which were vaguely known for him. Mr. Temple’s entry was dated two years ago and Mr. Mulholland’s was dated a year before that one. At this moment the landlady enters into the living-room with a tea-tray, sitting down in a sofa and offering some tea to Billy as he continues thinking aloud about where he had heard the two names in the guestbook before. Everything was uncanny and the following conversation with the landlady will increase this sensations. Meanwhile they were drinking a tea with a peculiar taste she was
