Social networks are websites or apps where we can connect with other people, share things like pictures and videos, and see what's going on in the world. But, there are some dangers for teenagers that aren't always easy to see. Privacy and Safety When teenagers spend a lot of time on social networks, they might not realize they're giving away personal information. Things like where they are, pictures of themselves, and what they do every day can put them at risk. People might try to steal their identity, bully them online, or trick them into doing things they shouldn't. Body Image and Eating Habits Looking at pictures of people with perfect bodies on social networks can make teenagers feel bad about themselves. They might start comparing themselves to these pictures and trying to look like them, even if it's not healthy. Getting Hooked Social networks can be really addictive. The feeling of getting likes and comments can make teenagers want to keep using them all the time. They might spend hours scrolling through their feeds instead of doing other things that are important, like spending time with friends or doing homework. School Work Suffers Using social networks too much can make it hard for teenagers to do well in school. They might get distracted and not pay attention to their homework or studying. Plus, being on their phones or computers late at night can make it hard for them to sleep, which makes it even harder to do well in school. Physical Effects In addition to the mental and emotional impacts, excessive use of social media can also lead to physical health issues among teenagers. Here are some physical effects to be aware of: - Sedentary lifestyle: Spending long hours sitting and staring at screens can contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, increasing the risk of obesity, heart disease, and other health problems. - Eye strain: Extended screen time can cause eye strain, dryness, and discomfort, leading to headaches, blurred vision, and difficulty focusing. - Sleep disturbances: Exposure to the blue light emitted by screens, particularly before bedtime, can disrupt sleep patterns, resulting in difficulty falling asleep and poor- quality sleep. Using Social Media Wisely Here are some ways to use social media in a smarter way: - Set limits: Decide how much time to spend on social networks each day and stick to it. - Think about how you feel: Pay attention to how using social media makes you feel and cut back if it makes you unhappy. Only follow accounts that make you feel good, and unfollow ones that make you feel bad.
