As a child, Yaroslav was fascinated and terrified of wolves. He had grown up reading fables that described them as intelligent and loyal, but also listening to the elders of his Russian village, who always told children to stay away from the forest and never went near a wolf. Unfortunately, he had never been a good listener. One day, when he was ten years old, he was on his way home from school when he heard a strange noise coming from the bushes at the edge of the forest. He was a curious little boy and started walking in the direction of the sound. Yaroslav only managed to take a few timid steps through the bushes when he spotted the source of the sound. A wolf cub had fallen into a ditch and was clawing at the steep walls in vain. It was too small to get out on its own. The boy was immediately drawn to the animal and didn't think twice about his safety when he decided to help it. He lay down on his stomach, climbed into the ditch and grabbed the wolf cub by the neck. Once out and safe, Yaroslav hugged him tightly to his chest. His fur was soft and his muzzle small, he was simply adorable. Yaroslav was too excited to realise that he was no longer alone. From the shadows, several four-legged figures emerged and set their eyes on him. They growled menacingly. By the time he became aware of the wolf pack, he was surrounded. Immediately, he felt his blood run cold. The adult wolves were slowly approaching, baring their teeth. However, just when he thought he would never see his family again, the little puppy he held in his trembling hands did something that changed the course of events. The little one licked Yaroslav's nose. He was too scared but immediately noticed that the adult wolves calmed down around him. His behaviour changed and suddenly he was no longer an enemy or prey. He was a friend. The boy stroked the cub's head and then slowly lowered him down. Once free, the little wolf ran towards the adults and barked loudly. The pack fled at once, and after one more glance at the boy, the wolves disappeared into the thicket. Yaroslav had to wait a few minutes for his body to stop shaking with fear. But when he was able to stand up, he ran as fast as his legs would allow. That day he learned that wolves were really smart, as the fables said. Years later, he would also discover how loyal they could be. Ten years later, Yaroslav was a young man with a promising future ahead of him. He had found work in the neighbouring town, and took the train every day to and from the office. He had also found love with a lovely girl named Katerina, who lived just a few blocks from his own. Every day when he got off work, he would stop by her house to bring her a small gift. Sometimes it was a flower or a small cake, and sometimes a pebble she found along the way. The custom had become a ritual, and she waited for him at the door every day like clockwork. That day, Yaroslav had taken a small bag of sweets for Katerina. He was on his way back with her and couldn't wait to get off the train. He fiddled with his phone to keep himself busy, and was so focused that he didn't notice the two men sitting next to him looking at him suspiciously. His town was near the end of the line, so there were only these two strangers and him left. Suddenly Yaroslav's phone was snatched from his hands, and when he looked up in disbelief, he was grabbed by the two men. They pounced on him and managed to snatch his wallet as well before dragging him down the corridor. The boy kicked and screamed, but they were far from the conductor's car and no one else heard. The guys had no masks and probably thought it was too risky to leave their victim in one piece. So they took advantage of a broken train door and threw Yaroslav out without batting an eyelid. The poor guy rolled at full speed down a small hill, and before he knew it, he was at the bottom of a ditch. He could see tall trees above him and guessed correctly that he had ended up in the forest before he lost consciousness. When he came to, it was already dark. His head ached and he was shivering with cold. Yaroslav managed to sit up and then looked around. The ditch was very deep and there seemed to be no foothold for climbing. The thieves had stolen his phone and he thought no one would hear him shouting from down there. He was too far from the edge of the forest, and panic set in and he had to fight back a wave of nausea. He had to stay calm and find a way out of there. He tried to think of Katerina, but then he felt his blood run cold, just as it had ten years earlier in that same forest. And when he looked up, he saw a wolf at the top of the ditch. It was huge and looked hungry, sniffing him from afar. And when it bared its teeth at him, Yaroslav was sure it was going to jump up and devour him. He threw his hat at the wild animal, trying to chase it away, and felt nauseous when the predator grabbed him with its huge teeth. But then, strangely, the wolf backed away and disappeared. The boy didn't know what to think. Maybe the beast had gone to seek the rest of his pack to share him as dinner. Was that really his end? However, unbeknownst to Yaroslav, this wolf had not returned to his pack. He had caught the scent of the young man in the hat, and now, he was running through the woods with a destination in mind. His kind never ventured into the city during the day, but the pack sometimes hung around at night when the humans were sleeping and harmless. Yaroslav's scent wasn't the only one he'd picked up from the hat. There was another in him, one he'd recognized from his nights on the town. He was connected to a particular house and that's where he headed. When the wolf arrived at his destination, he did something unthinkable that the villagers would count in amazement for the rest of his life. He knocked over two large flower pots that were on the porch of the house, alerting whoever was inside with all the noise. A young woman opened it in a few seconds, but when she saw the wolf, she let out a loud cry and closed the door. However, looking behind the window, she stopped screaming when she saw the hat in her mouth. She would recognize that thing everywhere, because she herself had given it to her boyfriend not long ago. The young woman was none other than Katerina. Then she carefully
