UNIT 3: PART II - PRINCIPLE OF EQUITY AND VALUES OF EQUALITY -Diversity as a value… just look around you none of us is the same, and that’s great!!!!! Ethnicity, Race, Incoming, Sexual orientation, Gender identity, Disabilities, Age, Religion, Health issues, Habits, Profession….. A) ETHNIC AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY -Globalization: economic, technology, social and cultural processes through communication and interdependence of countries  not globalization of ALL, one (occidental) dominates the other, annihilation of the other -However, not all processes can be assumed by other countries bc they do not have the resources, for example living in a yard. -Social is the most assumed for the countries least globalized. -Globalization:  Goods travel freely, people not that much (it is not free to travel)  global-capitalism  Factors: repulsive vs attractive (some cultures as seen as attractive and thus assumed, or repulsive and rejected)  Unequal distribution of wealth: we want to go to those places which look like wealthy  Affected countries: some lose inhabitants others are overcrowded  People carry with them their own culture. When you go out you are the most Spanish person ever  This creates diversity  However, we also adjust to the new place (value change); This can also lead to potential social conflict (when we want to protect ourselves, we may reject others) -Race is not the same as ethnic groups:  Race is defined in legal doctrine as actual or alleged characteristics which are biologically inherited. Shape of nose, color and shape of hair, etc.  Ethnicity. A large group of people who have the same national, racial, or cultural origins, or the state of belonging to such a group (Cambridge dictionary). Ethnicity could include race.  Language and religion function as cultural markers and in defining ethnicity and nationhood. Minority community: “a group of persons living in a given country or locality, having a race, religion, language and traditions of their own and united by this identity of race, religion, language and traditions in a sentiment of solidarity, with a view to preserving their traditions, maintaining their form of worship, ensuring the instruction and upbringing of their children in accordance with the spirit and traditions of their race and rendering mutual assistance to each other.” (International Court of Justice, Advisory Opinion. of July 31, 1930, concerning the Greco-Bulgarian Communities.)  Ethnicity more than race  Spanish people also experience racism in Europe  Germany, the Netherlands. She said she was from Mallorca. -Racial Equality Directive: Directive 2000/43/EC – or the Race Equality Directive – prohibits discrimination on grounds of race and ethnic origin. It covers the fields of:  employment & occupation vocational training  membership of employer and employee organisations social protection, including social security and health care education  access to goods and services which are available to the public, including housing  Under this Directive all Member States must have, or create, a specialised body for the promotion of equal treatment on grounds of race and ethnic origin.  The legislation sets out minimum requirements. Member States may therefore provide for a higher level of protection against discrimination in national legislation. -In the European Union, discrimination based on racial and ethnic origin in the fields of employment, social protection, including social security and healthcare; social advantages, education and access to and supply of goods available to the public including housing is prohibited pursuant to the Racial Equality Directive (RED), which was adopted in 2000. -Refugee and immigrant refugee (from conflict), but we only call refugees to those whose war we recognize. We use refugee instead of immigrant in a way, to give a justification, victimize them. If immigrants are European, we dont recognize them as immigrants. Expatriots? And within same country?
