Sonnet 20: A woman’s face with nature’s own hand painted BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE A woman’s face with nature’s own hand painted Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion; A woman’s gentle heart, but not acquainted With shifting change as is false women’s fashion; An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling, Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth; A man in hue, all hues in his controlling, Which steals men’s eyes and women’s souls amazeth. And for a woman wert thou first created, Till nature as she wrought thee fell a-doting, And by addition me of thee defeated By adding one thing to my purpose nothing. But since she pricked thee out for women's pleasure, Mine be thy love and thy love’s use their treasure. Line7: we have a polyptoton which is a repetition of a word of the same root with different endings. Line 14: we have a diacope: love and thy love It is at the beginning of the couplet where we have the volta or turning point Renaissance pay attention to units of thought, so punctuation is important. Punctuation in Renaissance marks our understanding in argumentation. The punctuation guide us to analize the idea that the poem wants to convey. EXAM decirle esto en el examen de la punctuation y del renaissance está muy interesante. Shakespeare presents the initial statement and develops it until the final conclusion. Thou: the addressee Tienes la cara de una mujer que ha sido pintada por la propia mano de la naturaleza. The poet does not star the statement in the normal order of a sentence. In fact, he starts in the following way: object + verb+ subject, so this a cristal clear example of an hyperbaton, which effect is to emphasize the object, the face of a woman. This face is perfect because it comes from the own hands of nature. Hast thou: tienes. The master-mistress of my passion: explanation of identity of thou... the master-mistress is an oxymorn master-mistress sexual difference. The lady is being idealized, Shakespeare is subverting Petrarchan convention turning the idealize lady into a man. Idealized level, aspires to serve the lady, normally in the sonnets the woman allows the man to be her servant. The object of love is idealized but this lady is a woman described physically painted by the own hands of nature. Afterthe initial statement the sonnet develops until the couple (this is really common in Shakespearian sonnets). In line 1 as wells as in line 3 we have the word “A” at the very beginning of each line: anaphoric structure: I am going to continue explaining and now I am talking about feelings. 2nd quatrain: the argument continues. Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth: convirtiendo en oro lo que mira, transforming the object. The mistress is a man in appearance and this appearance explaining his appearance control all appearance, all men look at him and women fall in love with him. Line 9: and for a woman...he was created to be a woman. Line 10: till nature: se neamoró de tí. Line 11: And by addition: nature was going first to create a woman, later on nature added something and defeatd the poet because it can not defeat htis creature. But: volta: change in the argumentation. The 2nd quatrain is devoted to the eyes and how men and women look at him. But since she: (nature) added pricked (male sexual member) put this thing for woman pleasure. Line 14: the poet is happy to have the love of this person; and use of this love woman´s treasure (physical contact). There is an spiritual level and a physical level in this sonnet. In one spiritual level aspire to get the idealized lady and there is not a physical intercourse and the other part at a physical level for the use of women. By adding sexual man member quite happy the sexual use of this man is for the woman, sexual intercourse. 1st line: personification of nature. Mister-mistress: alliteration to emphasize the oxymoron.
