The Viral Dress Image: A Case Study in Color Perception, Apuntes de Psicología

NeuroscienceColor PerceptionVision SciencePsychophysiology

An analysis of the viral dress image that caused a global debate in 2015 over its perceived colors. The scientific studies conducted to understand the visual processes involved in the perception of the dress and the individual differences that may impact the perception. The analysis focuses on the study by rabin et al. (2016) which investigates early stage optical, retinal, and neural mechanisms.

¡Descarga The Viral Dress Image: A Case Study in Color Perception y más Apuntes en PDF de Psicología solo en Docsity! “The Dress” Extract from Wikipedia text: "The dress" is a photo that became a viral Internet picture on 26 February 2015, when viewers disagreed over whether the item of clothing depicted was black and blue or white and gold. The phenomenon revealed differences in human colour perception which have been the subject of ongoing scientific investigation in neuroscience and vision science, with a number of papers published in peer-reviewed science journals. The photo originated from a washed-out colour photograph of a dress posted on the social networking service Tumblr, and a dispute over whether the dress pictured was blue and black, or white and gold. In the first week after the surfacing of the image alone, more than 10 million tweets mentioned the dress, using hashtags such as #thedress, #whiteandgold and #blackandblue. Although the actual colour of the dress was confirmed to be blue and black, the image prompted discussions surrounding the matter across various platforms, with users discussing their opinions on the colour and why they perceived the dress as being a certain colour. At the same time, members of the scientific community began to investigate the photo for fresh insights into human colour vision. A scientific analysis of “The Dress” Since the picture went viral, several studies have been conducted to try to elucidate the visual processes that are involved in the perception of the colors of the dress, and understand which individual differences might give rise to the opposing color percepts that different people experience. In this exercise, we will analyze the study by Rabin et al. (2016) which analyzes possible inter-individual differences in early stage optical, retinal and neural mechanisms that may impact the perception of the dress. However, before we analyze this paper in detail: • How many studies are you able to find in Medline, which have also studied the visual perception of the dress? • Has any revision of all these studies been published so far? • From a glance over the article titles and journals, can you identify which are main variables that have been investigated in relation to the perception of the dress? • Do you think that there is consensus in the scientific community on the issue?
